GameFront is shutting down, do we need to backup anything?

Postby Barto » Fri Apr 15, 2016 7:28 pm

It has been announced 2 days ago that the hosting platform GameFront will shut down at the end of this month. It gives people about 2 weeks to backup their own stuffs before it goes dark.

You could find more infos on their official press publications there:
http://www.gamefront.com/gamefront-is-c ... l-30-2016/

There are already lots of stuffs SG-related saved at those links:

http://smokinguns.parttimegeeks.net/
http://www.moddb.com/games/smokin-guns/downloads or http://www.moddb.com/games/smokin-guns/addons

Also, it seemed that the crazy people at ArchiveTeam saw it coming and had time to backup things in time. I remember experimenting with their tracker project and I saved about 16Go using my university's network  .

So my question is, is there still something backup-able at gamefront (SG or WQ3)?

Well, there have been some indications of gamefront being in trouble.

You could search our forum for all gamefront links. his yields only 15 matches. You then could check, whether anything needs to be saved. I think, the most valuable parts of SG's history are preserved.

Right, moddb was using GameFront and then saved the data on their end as I have observed. This explains why they were also one of the first to comment on it. Glad they made this choice of self-hosting, we'd be in bigger troubles if they weren't there. Still, for the best way to conserve data, GameFront should have provided a backup of their entire file collection to archive.org.

I'm not entirely sure a simple search works, is it looking into the intrinsics of the url tags of forum posts or just text matching 'gamefront' in paragraphs? In all cases, it looks like it's already too late for most URLs...

I just wanted to make sure we were safe. Worst case, probably ArchiveTeam will provide some files via archive.org and we may have some stuffs to get back if we happen to miss something.
Damn, GameFront was a wonderful place to get old gaming stuffs... Time passes so quickly...

That's why I also tried to contact Tequila. AFAIK, he is the only one who has access to the forum database and could search it for gamefront links.

As far as I can see, in terms of long-term information security, the SG project itself is not well positioned.

I've been thinking on this for the past few days and made more research today.

So, this is what we should consider to backup:
http://www.gamefront.com/files/listing/pub2/smokin-guns
http://www.gamefront.com/files/listing/ ... s/Western/
http://www.gamefront.com/files/listing/ ... ke_3_Maps/

or globally
http://www.gamefront.com/files/listing/ ... e_3_Arena/
http://www.gamefront.com/files/listing/ ... lfenstein/

I've already a copy of the first 3 links, what about the last two? What should I save?
There was also this rtcw mod called "Wild West", I'm gonna try to save it as well if I can. (edit: just patches there)

I'm going to post what I was able to backup (as of now), the system gives me 3 days before blocking changes made to those links. Please make any comments before the date ends, otherwise I'll be unable to fill any requests unless I have to reupload everything and keep the old data like a failure.

I've basically downloaded everything possible there that was related to the game, grouped by status (WQ3 on one hand, SG on the other), and tried to add a 'description.txt' text file that corresponds to the title of the uploaded file and possibly a small description of the game/file I had copy-pasted.
Hearing any suggestion is welcomed :-) .

https://archive.org/details/wq3gamefront

Anything else important to backup?
Oh, yes, our old fellows from the RTCW mod called Wild West, there is definitely some content there. I'm on it. There it is:

https://archive.org/details/thewildwestgamefront

-- EDIT --
I also explored fileplanet for some SG/WQ3/WW files (no Q3A or RTCW/Wolf:ET), nothing really big.
Good thing it is already saved - again - by the Archive Team.
The only interesting file is a small blood texture mod made by -DES-Player_3 back in 2009. Here is the url:
https://archive.org/download/Fileplanet ... xtures.pk3

Anything else to prevently backup?
