Big problem, on my new laptop...

Postby NightcrawleR » Sat Mar 29, 2008 9:26 pm

Howdy all! I know i haven't been on for a while, but balanced out with busy-ness and the fact that WQ3 does not want to work!
After i got it, i changed the resolution to 1280 x 800, and now when i run Q3, it gives me error messages and shuts down

...setting mode 8: 1280 1024 FS
...using colorsbits of 16
...calling CDS: failed, bad mode
...trying next higher resolution: failed, bad mode
...restoring display settings
...window already present, CreateWindowEx skipped
Initializing OpenGL driver
...WARNING: fullscreen unavailable in this mode
...shutting down QGL
...unloading OpenGL DLL
...assuming '3dfxvgl' is a standalone driver
...initializing QGL
...WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available
...shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )
-----------------------
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem
^^
that's the actual error.

This could also be due to me using 1280 x 800, and not 1280 x 1024, but i think i accidentally set it too high, and now i cannot fix it, either in Q3Config files in WQ3 folder, or through OpenGL, which i also cannot reinstall because i'm using a Vista. I hope that also isn't a problem.

I hope i will be able to play again soon...

Were you able to play before you made the change? In the past when I've seen an error like this on friends computers, updating (or reinstalling) the video card drivers fixed it. Give that a try.

Quake 3 has problems on some Vista computers.

You can not select the wrong rez. If your laptop does not support a rez it will not show up to select it..

Quake 3 does not support 1280x800 but you can hack it to make it work. Here's how.

Code: Select all
2 ) Run once quake 3 once, and quit, to generate the .cfg file. Seeing as you have run it already, the cfg should be there already..

3 ) Navigate to 'GameDirectory\Base\' directory. (where GameDirectory
is where you installed the game)

4 ) Right click the 'whatever.cfg' file. (for example: q3config.cfg in Quake 3)

5 ) Select 'Open With' or 'Open' in the right click menu and then
choose 'Wordpad' in the scroll list. Do NOT choose 'search on the
net'. It's a waste of time.

6 ) You can either have the .cfg files associated with Wordpad or not
from then on.

7 ) Use find (Ctrl-F) to find the string 'seta r_customwidth' and
change the value in the quotes to read 1280.

8 ) The string 'seta r_customheight' should be below it, if it isn't,
find it, and change it to 800.

9 ) THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Change the line 'seta r_mode' to '-1'.
Otherwise it will ignore the settings and do its own thing.

10 ) Find the line 'seta cg_fov' and change the value to '115' or
whatever you want. The exact Field of Vision is a matter of taste, so
fiddle and find which setting you like the most!

11 ) Once these changes have been made, save them and start the game.
Do NOT change the resolution in the settings panel, or you will have
to edit the .cfg file again.

You might have to the same to the .cfg in the wq3 folder too..

It says access is denied. The full error line is
Acess to C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\westernq3\default.cfg was denied.

Either way, i just created a Notepad document on the desktop, and copied over all the information, and then wrote over the real config with the one on my desktop, and it SEEMINGLY worked,
though I still get the same error message, even with the new config settings

EDIT:
Even when i uninstall and delete the folder COMPLETELY, i get the same error message. So that leaves me to assume i need to change something with OpenGL.
EDIT2: It works perfectly fine on Regular Quake III which i have not changed the resolution too, nor can i find the config file for.

ATI card in the laptop? ATI cards and Vista have provlems with quake 3 and have not been solved yet.

You can also try running quake3 in win xp compat mode.

If quake 3 runs fine then it is a problem with the wq3 .cfg. You will want to change the settings I posted above in the q3config.cfg (not default.cfg) located in the wq3 folder...

Problems come in 2's, i suppose.
Now it's saying i don't have pak3 on the Rawhide and Wasteland server, when i clearly do in my WQ3 folder.
Any ideas?
