Call for Host: Moving or mothballing Special Bude

Postby TheDoctor » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:18 pm

UPDATE: SpecialBude and TerraNova are back. Read more below.

---

Original post: Dear SG players and community members.

Summary: I have to find a new host for the servers Special Bude, Terra Nova, and possibly also for ScrewOA. If you want to see these servers in operation and have the necessary resources (money and/or a host), please consider to provide a new home for them.

Explanation: On January 31st, I was informed by @spi, the owner of Baller Bude, that, because of understandable organizational reasons, the host of Baller Bude will no longer be able to co-host Special Bude (SG1.0, 212.65.13.87:27961), Terra Nova (SG1.1b4 map test server, 212.65.13.87:27963) and ScrewOA (Corkscrew mod on OpenArena, 212.65.13.87:27962). As these servers are either close to my heart (SB, ScrewOA) or provide an important service to the community (Terra Nova), I don't want them to perish. However, currently, I absolutely cannot afford to host them on my own expense.

Therefore I ask for you help: If you want to keep these servers in operation and have the necessary resources (either a host with available capacities or the money to rent one), please consider to provide a new home for these servers. I would then offer to install, operate and improve the aforementioned services free of charge.

Necessary requirements:
- a dedicated host (current host was an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.80GHz, 1 GB RAM)
- a decent internet connection (24h/day online, static IP, at least 1MBit up-link)
- a Linux-based operating system (current OS is Gentoo)
- shell access
- full administrative freedom w.r.t. the aforementioned servers

Please contact me via PM or write an email to oa.doctor (at) gmail.com for further information. My offer to host these services on a foreign host is valid until March 1st 2011. After that, I'll mothball them.

PS: The servers went down on February, 2nd  .
PPS: AFAIK, Baller Bude itself will not be affected from this migration and I'll also remain in charge there and continue to administrate it, together with @spi and Doppel.

This is really bad news, because I know that SpecialBude has his estimators and Terra Nova is really useful for testing new maps and in encouraging new mappers! I don't know so much about ScrewOA.

By my side, I have no idea of which could be the possible cost for a (virtual?) dedicated server... I'm not expert at all. So probably I could contribute only to a part of expenses.

I hope some other offers will follow.

Due to a scheduled maintenance of the electrical systems of the company hosting BB, BB's server had to shutdown for some hours on Friday. It didn't went up again as an error w.r.t. the ext2 filesystem emerged (e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda3). Usually, this is a recoverable error, but @spi (the owner) considers the disk to be unreliable and plans to set-up a new system. Depending how much can be salvaged from the original disk, expect BB to remain down for the week.

as doc informed you gunners, i wasnt amused as i
recognized that the bb server doesnt comes up after the shutdown.
i try to fix the corrupt fs without success. while working on the system
i notice that the harddisk doesnt sound healthy while access !
my trust is gone on this hardware, so i decide to switch
on an faster newer piece.

atm, i build the platform which takes some time. bb downtime was planed for 2 hours, now it could a little bit longer ;)

be sure, bb comes back and the team do all for it !
thanx for you appreciation

best regards
