Compiling on Debian 8 (Jessie)

Postby jamieson » Mon Jan 09, 2017 1:26 am

I made the following changes to http://wiki.smokin-guns.org/wiki/Smokin ... ding/linux (can't figure out how to edit) to build SG on Debian Jessie (8):

Make sure you have a deb-src in your sources.list somewhere:

Code: Select all
    cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sources.list
    deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main

Building on a 64-bit system might mean you need some extra libs. I already have a lot of them, but needed to add these.. (this list is probably incomplete)

Code: Select all
    sudo apt-get install libsdl-dev libfreetype6-dev libgl1-mesa-dev

I also had to do this..

Code: Select all
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so

Then `make -j8` compiled everything in a few seconds. Awesome! :-)

Are there any plans to move the wiki or howto to somewhere like github or wikipedia so we can contribute?

To be more clear, those were the changes that I WANTED to make (or ask questions about) but couldn't figure out how to edit (or don't have permission)... so those changes can be tried if you're trying to build on Jessie.

How to contribute?

Postby jamieson » Fri Jan 13, 2017 8:53 pm

It seems to be hard to contribute to Smoking Guns. Everything is locked down in fear of spam, I guess!

I'd love to be able to edit the wiki, provide pull requests, ask questions, or even just post on this forum, but everything is locked down and results in (at best) moderator approval delays or (at worst) a complete inability to even participate (i.e., it's impossible to modify or comment on the Trac wiki apparently). :-(

Any chance on opening things up and/or moving to Github or Bitbucket or more modern platforms that make it easier to participate?

Hi Jamieson,

welcome to the forum. Indeed, there was a time where this forum was the target of spammers and we had to issue the rule, that the first three posts of newly created accounts have to be manually approved. Since you have now more than three posts, you have surpassed this restriction.

Let me also ensure you (and everybody else, who is reading this), every human participant is welcome here, especially if he has questions regarding SG.

Best regards,

TheDoctor

Regarding the wiki: the forum credentials should be accepted by the wiki, too. However, similar to the spam protection here, a low post count might have blocked you from using it.

Try http://wiki.smokin-guns.org/login now. I've noticed, that the username must be lower-case (at least for me, the username TheDoctor wasn't accepted, while thedoctor was).

If you successfully logged in, go to the page you want to edit. An "Edit this page"-button is at the bottom of the page.

Hi jamieson,

welcome on-board, and thank you for your contribution.

About the wiki, I'm the admin and you should now have access to it as told TheDoctor. Tell me if you still are in trouble.

You may even ask for site edition rights if you want to contribute to more exposed place ! This is explain in this old post. There's not so much steps to gain some privileges, you just need to show you seriously want to help our little community
