Zero Ping Mod [ZPM] on Smoking' Guns

Postby fazendero » Fri Nov 13, 2009 6:08 am

Howdy!!! I am here to explain one idea that I have about engine of game...
Are you know about Zero Ping Mod[ZPM] of Quake 3 Arena?
I think that this mod works very well... I want to propose that SG Productions / Iron Claw Interactive can use this ZPM "technologie" on Smokin'Guns..
For me, this "discover" is an evolution on quake online engine, and in my point of view it can be used in SG, it will beneficit all SG Players around the world and can break barriers of international players/servers...
What think you about Zero Ping Mod[ZPM] on Smokin'Guns engine?

The "about" section of the ZeroPing homepage doesn't work and there is very little information, but if I got it right, the mod implements client-side aiming/hit detection, like e.g. sauerbraten does:
http://www.sauerbraten.org/docs/game.html#network_code

Is this correct? Are there any other interesting features?

The link you gave is not related.

Search google for "Zero-Ping-Mode-v4.3-Mod" you'll find good old links... Especially the official site is always available: http://www.zpmode.org/index2.php
Btw this kind of stuff is not very sure for online gaming, Unlagged is better for that. And the related code is not opensource. It would have been easy to try it before if it was opensource.

That's exactly what I did. And the link "What is ZPM?" points to this:
http://www.zpmode.org/index2.php?zpm=whatis

If you get more than some internal errors, then you're lucky :?

In the F.A.Q. section of the ZPM homepage (that one works) it says
"Isn't a client side hit-check a open door for Cheaters?"

So, it seems that it's all about client-side aiming and hit-detection. And that's exactly what the Sauerbraten developers implemented (as described in the link). Imho, the sauerbraten mechanism is more similar to ZeroPing than Unlagged is. But it is hard to tell with that little information about ZPM. However, the project seems to be dead anyway...
