Teamoverlay

Postby Pardner » Sun Jan 23, 2011 12:21 am

Is there any interest in having the Q3 style overlay in SG? Currently the overlay lists the player's name, health, location, and if they have the BR gold.

DOWNLOAD HERE

Package includes new qvm's (forgot which rev from the repos I used) and a test map ( /map br_test ). The package is for GS 1.1b4.

Here is a screenshot of what I have right now:

Note: I have not created/chosen a background image for the overlay yet.

If there is interest, I will start to add map locations to the maps, if not I will leave good enough alone :D

And as in Q3, the teamoverlay can be turned off using cg_teamoverlay 0 (the cg_teamoverlay cvar is still present in SG even though the overlay code was not used :| )

I wouldn't mind that but as an option.

I agree this could be a good feature, btw maybe servers admin you be able to hide that if they think it should be in some case. What servers admins think ?

I agree that it should be useful if it can be turned off server side, to let to the server admin the choice.

its currently controlled via client side. I don't know how to have the server admin force it on/off.

That's one of the features i missed, when i switched to SG.

(the feature itself is implemented, but i think the locations within the maps weren't defined --- i tried a year ago, so not sure if i remember correctly)

Great idea, Pardner. I would like to see how that works on the game, eventhou its completly out of context. I mean, if we are trying to make things realistic, makes no sense for a cowboy to simply know where his friends are, and if they got the moneybag, since they have no communication at all. This works better for modern FPSs, in which players have electionic comunication with others (radars, earphones/microphones, GPS, and localizers). I believe we have a very realistic communication system in SG: the gesture :D
Most guys dont use it, but we SDEs used it a lot in the old times, when we were improving our teamplay strategies. Perhaps we could implement more gestures, besides the "come here" one.

True, and honestly it is something that I have not missed in SG, but I figured it might be nice since BR has become very popular and competitive.

I see 3 "no" votes, but nobody has explained why. I am interested in both sides of the agreement.

EDIT: I have uploaded my test package for those who want to try it out. Package includes a test map ( /map br_test ) that has locations. Other maps will have a blank location but it will still display teammate's health and if they have the gold.

work better together.

I started making a background image for the overlay. Here are two screens, one with a solid background, and the other is with an opaque background:

But I ran into a small menu bug. The overlay is on top of the weapon menu. Simple fix would be to have the weapon menu on top of the overlay as the weapon menu is not always shown.

Another fix would be to integrate the team overlay information into the scores menu. There seems to be plenty of space to add health, location, and moneybag info:
