! IMPORTANT ! A question to the devs about self-maded maps

Postby Bart202 » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:33 pm

Hello Mappers, Players, Linux Fans and the Rest!

I talked a few weeks about that with TheDoctor, he said he had a few dialoges with Pardner and other devs.
It's simple: You install your mapping programms, you victimize lots of time for your map, fight against bugs and finally finish it! 8O

We all know mapping needs skills, yes I want to say that you can't include every kind of map... like mine .. Eboa :P

But let's guess there is a talented mapper with a really great map. Players like it 8)

Here the question: What do you devs need to include a map ?
Is the .map file just enough ?
Are there any other rights needed ?
Do you need an e-mail or anything like that to reach the mapper every time ?
I ask that because in many cases the mapper disappears and the map is in time.

What do I want to prevent here with ?
That mappers won't loose the moral on mapping. A big point here is just the fact that the process until a finished map is a long one.

Give me your opinions and answers :) Thank you!

P.S I will edit the thread while giving answers :)

You should put the map under a proper license like CC, CC0, PD etc. It is important that you state the license in your readme file.

Some sort of contact information would be great; email, website, irc, whatever. As long as it lives long enough.

I'd to add any mappers interested could obtain a dedicated page for each of his maps on http://www.smokin-guns.org . There, he could describe the maps, put explanations, changelog, anything he could want to say about the map and of course publish the map itself !

Each page could be automatically linked to a dedicated topic in the forum so anyone can easily comment the work and be involved in the map discussion.

Any mappers interested should just request to be a member of forum "Website publishing" group. See your User Control Panel, "Usersgroup" tab, select then "Website publishing" and ask to "Join selected" and submit... Then you'll obtain access to a dedicated forum where you'll be able to talk about your wishes and we will give you needed access on the Drupal website.

Some will say this is not so easy than a wiki, but this is definitively more secure...

A "Website publishing" admin will still have to accept your submission (I'll do asap of course).

Maybe I'm not clear enough but you can also check phpBBforum FAQ there to understand what I mean ;)

Okay, my poor english level is beating me !! :x

I'll add requesting people manually if they wish. So steve, Bart202, do you wish to get your own page for each of your maps on the official site ? You'll be our beta-tester for that feature ;)

Any other mapper can still apply here if they don't understand how to apply to a forum group !

Ah, I think I understand now.

It could be a rather good idea, I might be willing to participate once I get my computer setup (long story about that map of mine and various burn-out computers)...
