A fresh map for all you gunslingers out there ;)

Postby Breli » Mon Apr 13, 2020 9:53 am

Howdy folks!

Well, it is awfully quite in here so lets see whether there are some gunslingers left who want to see some fresh content! ;)

More than a decade ago I had to abandon my last project in an unfinished state. Life and other stuff got in the way. Now with all the madness happening around the world my friends persuaded me to play little in order to pass some time in confinement. We had a blast!
I remembered my old project from back then and managed to recover the source file from my old mails. So here you go! My homage to one of the GREATEST MOVIES EVER MADE!

If you don't know which movie I am talking about, you are not entitled to play the map!

We are currently playtesting it a little. I will release it in its current state. I might fight time in the following weeks to fix some bugs but I won’t be able to work as much as last week.

Key facts:
  • DM only, I don’t see BR working in this layout
  • This is NOT optimized for performance and I will not spent time on it. This shouldn’t be a problem given todays rendering power of bread and butter computers
  • Bots don’t work. Sorry, but bspc craps out on me and there is nothing I can do about it.

Note! I might update this version so please be aware that you might have to re-download it! That being said, we already played it for several hours and didn’t find any major issue so far.

Grab the map here

Have fun!

Thank you so much Breli for this high quality map !!

For the ones who want to quickly test it, I just setup a dedicated server where only that map could be played |D

You should see the "SweetWater Test" in your online servers list !

I also added it to DeathMatch map cycle into the "smokin-guns.org-MIXED" server.

Have fun !!!

I was far from expecting that: two weeks after setuping the tools back you have a fresh map to show :o

What a nice little map, with some great non-stock textures. I was surprised how dangerous it is to just walk in front of the barn without being shot from all sides. I really love how you can come and leave the barn by the windows, you can do some nice trickery there.

I've reported you the visual bugs I saw already (crate textures being mirrored, the kettle in the kitchen not having any texture inside (neither water), that weird shape in the room next to it, the backward looking armoire, and the smoke of the kitchen being seen upstairs).

In term of performances, during our playtest I had a couple of slowdowns. I have yet to determine if this is map or game related. But yeah, I can observe that most of the map is rendered all the time, and that the bsp file is quite big. This is a tradeoff: either you have the map with globally lower fps since you show everything, or you may have freezes when moving from one area to another with a highly optimized map.
I've recorded that game if anyone is interested to see me play horribly.

To trim the size of the bsp a little, I can suggest to use an external hi-res lightmap. It ain't easy to do (not sure if tutorials for it still exists), but gives great results instead of increasing samples and samplesize in q3map2's light execution.

I was able to execute bspc and gave you my aas output. Not sure which version of bspc gives you problem, but mine was compiled from https://github.com/sago007/bspc on Linux. I have a stack error at the end of the execution, but the file do work.

Lastly, I'm talking of this because I know illwieckz rather well, I'd love you to have a chat with him about the license (texture and everything) so that it will not go in the limbo of copyright unknowns.

Hi Barto!

Thanks for the feedback. I used the bspc version that came with GtkRadiant since it is not included in NetRadiant. I got it working once (!) but now everytime I want to compile the aas file, it simply stops after searching the brush sides.

Well, we can use an aas file from your side for the next version.

Hi Breli,

thank you for taking the time to finish and publish your map.

I concur. Pretty please, choose a license (of your liking) and consider publishing your map file as well (include it into the pk3 together with a license.txt).

Since you use drydesertsky, consider using the newer version inside zvm.pk3. It's based on https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monument_ ... valley.jpg and therefore CC BY-SA 3.0.

@Tequila: could you provide the map under http://download.smokin-guns.org/mirror. ... twater.pk3 as well?

Hi

I asked Breli to create a dedicated wiki page there: SweetWater in our wiki on the model of 5GentsHacienda by MachoBastard
So he will also clarify the license

Anyway, I think a dedicated github repository should also be used when the license permits the source to be released. So Illwieckz can use it for the future SmokinGunsAssets repository. The advantage would also be able to keep a branch for each targeted engine.

TheDoctor, I put a link toward http://download.smokin-guns.org/mirror. ... twater.pk3, let me know if I did wrong ;-)

Well, the licensing issue seems to be the most pressing one from what I read here.

For what its worth: I will release all my map files/sources and publish them under a free license so that they can be re-used by future mappers.

Hey, that's an awesome map!

If you don't know which movie I am talking about, you are not entitled to play the map!

I think the same.

Also there is already a map (highnoon) featuring this movie:

But unfortunately that's a duel map, which is a game mode that is not played a lot…

I'seen the effort on the terrain work you did on the floor.

For what its worth: I will release all my map files/sources and publish them under a free license so that they can be re-used by future mappers.

Great! this map definitely deserves a repository, this map deserves to live forever. :D

I knew about the Duel map of course

But who knows! Maybe my homage to OUATITW is actually a triology and there is more to come? 8D ...

If it takes me another 12 years to publish the next one, we will have died of old age once the triology is done

Nice to see you around Breli and that you returned, your map is so beautiful and congratulations that you give Smokin' Guns a fresh inspirational start for its future!

I have a problem with your map, as I do with other new ones from Baller Bude server. Each time I try to enter in SweetWater map, I'm stuck in the map loading screen, only hearing the inside generic map sounds, players moving, messages beeping, fire shoots, character screams, dynamites booms, etc., also, I can play too, but blindly like a drunken fighter. I made some screenshots too, but all of them contain the map loading screen. I can't see the console too, there could be some errors displayed. Re-downloading the map doesn't help. I think it is something about how texture is processed on my old rig, maybe I need to try some console commands to adjust drastically the graphics and then I may be able to play, but in frustration.

I'm glad that so many beloved friends are so active nowadays. :)

Please test this map on another server and report back, whether or not you experience the same problem.

Sorry to hear that. As Doctor already advised: Please test whether you have the same problem locally or on other servers. Baller Bude uses some non standard config that might be an issue here.
