Advice for Linux users

Postby Tequila » Thu Jan 01, 2009 11:41 pm

To install the game:
    * Get the ZIP package
    * Unzip it in your home folder
    * Rename the base folder from "Smokin' Guns" to "SmokinGuns" as the engine will always look for that folder as installed game path.
    * in the folder make sure "smokinguns.x86" has the execution right ("chmod +x smokinguns.x86" from a console will fix that)
Then you can run "smokinguns.x86" from anywhere.
For example, you can create a link on your desktop pointing to "~/SmokinGuns/smokinguns.x86" and just have to click on it to start the game.

Also make sure you have opengl and openal drivers installed in their 32bits version.

Im a Linux user, and i followed your instructions to the letter, but kept getting errors when i chose to run the exe, i discovered what i had to do to cure that and get the game runnning which was : Rightclick on the x86 file, pick properties, then permissions, then ticked the box to " Allow executing file as program" double clicked on it and it ran...just incase any other linux users have my initial problem.

It's what Tequila says by :

* in the folder make sure "smokinguns.x86" has the execution right ("chmod +x smokinguns.x86" from a console will fix that)

But his procedure is command-line way, and yours GUI way. Both have the same result.

Good shoot this morning, Gordo !

It doesn't work on my Gentoo Linux: :?

---
[EDITED] It works :D I forgot to use homedir :D
---

[dmp[@]sirius] chmod +x smokinguns.x86
[dmp[@]sirius] ./smokinguns.x86
zsh: brak dostępu: ./smokinguns.x86
^ it means access denied, same using bash

It's the same error as I try to exec any file without +x

[dmp[@]sirius] ls -lh

[dmp[@]sirius] startx /mnt/liberty/oth/SmokinGuns/smokinguns.x86 -- :2
reports error too:
/mnt/liberty/oth/SmokinGuns/smokinguns.x86: /mnt/liberty/oth/SmokinGuns/smokinguns.x86: cannot execute binary file

Any hints?

wine smokinguns.exe
works quite fine, but it's not native. I guess slower :|

Yep in fact I guess you were trying to start the binary from a mounted folder, maybe mounted as vfat (usb key ?). In such way, the mounted point is surely mounted with noexec option, then that's better to start it from your homedir ;)

"Out of Range" on display

Postby CoolHand » Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:20 pm

I had this issue on my Debian/Sidux system when first running the SA, so thought I'd post my workaround for anyone else that has it. It is an LCD monitor with native 1280x1024 resolution. when I ran SG, it would black the screen, and "Out of Range" would display on the monitor while the music played in the backgrount. I'd have to ctrl-alt-bkspc to restart my X server when it did it.
To get SG to work I went into the config file created and set the fullscreen parameter to 0 instead of 1, and then it loaded in a window. After that, I could change the options to 1280x1024, and fullscreen and it loads fullscreen perfectly now.
The file is:
~/.smokinguns/smokinguns/q3config.cfg

and the parameter is:
seta r_fullscreen "0"

--------------
I actually ended up changing my system wide config after that so any new users would have it start in a window and not have the issue...
/usr/local/games/SmokinGuns/smokinguns/q3config.cfg

---------------
Hope this may help someone out someday :)

High cpu for dedicated server on Gentoo

Postby xgregx » Fri Sep 25, 2009 4:08 am

Hey all -
This game looks really cool so far.
I'm trying to get the dedicated server working on Gentoo Linux. On 2 different boxes, the server starts and stays at 100% cpu. No error output to the console. Anyone experience this?
Thanks,
Greg

Welcome xgregx,

such problem may be related to how you're starting the binary.

Tell us which binary you're trying to use. Tell us also the command line you're using.

Is that to start a public server or a lan private server ?
If your server config file is not a secret (any rconpassword removed), you can put it on pastebin for example and give us the link.

I'm starting with all defaults. Just testing it out at this point.
All I'm doing is running ./smokinguns_dedicated.x86

The only stuff I changed in server.cfg is the hostname/motd stuff
// Administrator Info
sets Admin "Rawhide_McGee"
sets Email ""

// Server Name and Daily Message
set sv_hostname "OpenGamePanel.org Smokin' Guns Server"
sets g_motd "Powered by OGP - visht opengamepanel.org"// This is the message that will be displayed during loading.
sets sv_Location "California - USA"

Thanks for the help in advance!

So just starting dedicated is not sufficient.

You must specify a map to start in some way...

If you have modified the "server.cfg" file, you should start the dedicated server in at least that way on a terminal:
Code: Select all
./smokinguns_dedicated.x86 +exec server.cfg

Is that your problem ? I confirm released 1.0 dedicated is running at 100% cpu when it doesn't know what to do... Still fixed in 1.1 branch.

That didn't help, I ran the exact command line you gave me, and I also tried adding the map switch.
Thanks for the help. Any other sugguestions? I'll try a few other command lines.
Thanks again!

Hey, we can't really help you if you don't put any command line output !!
Sometime problems come only with little mistake we can just point you out if you give as much information as you can... Telling what you are trying to do is just a context, but we really need to see the result to understand your problem.
