Hi there, just downloaded Smokin' Guns, whenver I try and start it, the console says
Initializing OpenGL driver
...getting DC: succeeded
...GLW_ChoosePFD( 16, 16, 0 )
...35 PFDs found
...GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...GLW_ChoosePFD( 16, 16, 0 )
...35 PFDs found
...GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...failed to find an appropriate PIXELFORMAT
...restoring display settings
...WARNING: could not set the given mode (3)
...shutting down QGL
...unloading OpenGL DLL
...assuming '3dfxvgl' is a standalone driver
...initializing QGL
...WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available
...shutting down QGL
----- CL_Shutdown -----
RE_Shutdown( 1 )
-----------------------
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

What does this mean, coz I really don't know much about computers

Looks like your graphics card driver ist not properly installed.

Which Operating System do you use? If it's Windows, also update DirectX.

Have you installed a driver for your gfx card? I'm not sure the one that comes with Windows works.

SG uses openGL, not directX, which is a bit uncommon.

The DirectX Runtime usually also installs OpenGL (as a part of the DX SDK), at least it did for me.

Windows default drivers don't have 3d acceleration, thus SG won't work. Other games shouldn't eihter.

The other day I was setting up SG on a friend's computer and got this error. The computer was running Windows and had a fairly old ATI graphics card. Some searching on the web suggests it is a fairly common problem with Quake 3 games, but I couldn't find any solution (tried changing drivers and various other tweaks). The engine thinks that the computer has a 3dfx graphics card for some reason and tries to load the modules for that, but they're not there. In the end the only way I could get it to work was to switch to an even older nVidia graphics card, their drivers seem a bit better than ATI's.

If anyone has come up with a solution for it I'd be interested to hear what they did!

Aw crap! I upgraded to Windows 7 RC and I've got this same error. Direct X 10 is installed, I already updated graphics drivers and BIOS... before the upgrade my computer ran SG fine, so there's got to be a way now, doesn't there?

Anyone else running SG in Win7?

Edit: a few more details...

Integrated graphics on an old Dell machine, but it ran SG just fine when I had XP.
In Device Manager, under Display Adapters, it has the Intel(R)82865G Graphics Controller which is up-to-date.
openGL32.dll does exist in System32 folder.

I posted on this already... Software OpenGL rendering is removed from 7 and now must be provided by the GPU vendor. It isn't part of DirectX, it was part of the OS itself. They depreciated OpenGL because NVIDIA and ATI supplemented their archaic 1.4-based version for years, and finally enough was enough, 6 year old API only used by Quake 3 didn't warrant more bloat, redundancy and support. Take it up with your GPU vendor, not Microsoft, else don't use 7 on such archaic hardware.
