Fullscreen problems

Postby 00bassmaster00 » Sun Nov 08, 2009 2:50 am

Anyone else have problems running SG in fullscreen mode. Whenever I try to either switch to or start the game up in fullscreen mode, it crashes. It won't even reboot, I have to power down the computer. By the way I'm running Vista 64 bit. It's not that big of a deal, just kinda irritating.

Does it create a crashlog.txt? Any chances to catch some error messages?

The program loads just fine like it does when running in a window. when it goes fullscreen the whole screen goes black. Won't let me do anything but shut the comp. down. Updated my video drivers last night. Thought that might help, but same thing. Wasn't sure if this was a common problem with vista. I also tried it on another game and same thing. They run great in a window.

If other games don't work either, this problem is most likely not specific to Smokin' Guns.

Did you already search the web whether that's a problem with your hardware-software combination? If so, other users might have reported a solution already.

Since I'm not familiar with windows anymore, a generic advise is to try an older driver as well.

I am on vista32 and I have no problem launching Smokin' Guns. Have you tried using the beta1.1b2 yet? For the 1.0 release, the opening video did not play for me. It was always a black screen, but I was able to click or Esc past it. Also, what resolution (fullscreen) are you trying to launch Smokin' Guns into?

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 and flatpanel screen. I had to make sure the widescreen setting was the same as the "native resolution" of the monitor to work right. Not sure this is the same thing. Can you get to the setup before it goes black?

The resolution that i am running on my desktop is 1440x900. and no I'm not able to get to the setup screen before it goes black. I may try matching up the resolutions of my desktop to what the game is running to see if that helps. I do thank all you guys for the suggestions.

For what it is worth 1440 x 900 is mode 13 in 1.1. So if you put a little autoexec.cfg file in the smokinguns folder of your game files, that says,
"seta r_mode "13"", the game will load at that resolution. Still not sure that's the problem, but it's an idea. :)

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customwidth "1440"
seta r_customheight "900"
seta r_customPixelAspect "1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"

This should work with any version of Smokin' Guns (or ioQuake in general).
