With cordite in the air, splintered steel, shell casings and powder burns, there’s only one explanation...
If you have any trouble with SG, this is the place to ask.

Fedora 12 x86_64 VM_Create on UI failed

Postby LinuxDanP » Fri May 28, 2010 9:12 pm

Hi all,

I just tried downloading Smokin' Guns from HugeLaser, and after getting the dependencies resolved when I run
Code: Select all
./smokinguns.x86_64
the screen goes black for a few seconds as if it was loading, and the the desktop re-appears as normal. In looking at the output, after the printout about successful sound initialization I see:
Code: Select all
--------------------------------
Loading vm file vm/ui.qvm...
Failed.
----- CL_Shutdown -----
OpenAL capture device closed.
RE_Shutdown( 1 )
-----------------------
VM_Create on UI failed

What's up with that? It's the standard release, I also tried the developer release, with no luck either.

Ensure your files are intact, reinstall if not so. Remove custom pk3s, if any. Remove every .cfg, just in case.
Do you mean v1.1 with "dev release"?

I've got SG running on 64bit Gentoo with no problems :)

Yeah, by developer release I mean v1.1-beta4-engine-only-update. I removed all .cfg files, but then it failed because it couldn't find default.cfg, so I copied that one back but didn't replace the other two. Same ol' behavior. What do you mean by "custom pk3"? The only ones that are there are the ones that were in the download. How would I go about checking them?

Usually mods and maps are also stored in your game installation, but they can corrupt the game. Since there aren't that many custom maps or even mods, that shouldn't be the problem.
I'm sorry you deleted default.cfg, didn't notice this crucial file is placed outside the game's standard pk3s, doh!

Here are the md5sums of my pk3s

Oh, I didn't delete the .cfg files, I just moved them out of the directory they were in. I'll run md5sum against those files and let you know what I find.

Hm, well, a lot of the md5's were different, but not only that, I seem to be missing quite a few files, such as the textures and sounds .pk3 files. I'll try downloading from a different file host and see what I get.

You know that you need all of v1.0's files for the v1.1b4 update? Those betas aren't standalone.

Yeah, I copied the v1.0 files to the v1.1 directory.

Oops, sorry for the mis-info, but I was using the v1.1 .86_64 executable file, since v0.1 doesn't have an x86_64 build. I had done the downloads/work early in the week, and set it aside for a few days and promptly forgot exactly what I had done.

Any idea where I could get a v1.0 64-bit build?

The engines included in the betas do work with any version of the game, including other betas, i.e. they do not depend on the pk3s. You could also check out the developer working version from SVN, compile and use it with either v1.0 or v1.1x. If you're lazy, here's some bleeding edge for you http://wmd.game-host.org/smokin-guns-or ... se/x86_64/ :)
So any 64bit build will do.

Some of the files I posted are part of beta update and are not neccessarily needed to play online, since most servers still run v1.0.

I think it'd be easiest if you coud provide a list of files plus checksums and preferrably where they're from. This way we can check whether the install is complete and intact.

Apart from being a corrupted file problem, I have no real clues as to what could be causing your problem. At least that's the only situation when I ran into that error.

Ok, thanks, I'll try one of those as soon as I get a chance, and post back the md5 sums.

Still waiting for md5sums as a last resort.
Did you manage to run any other ioquake based game like World of Padman, Open Arena or ioUrbanTerror?

Ok, here are the md5sum results:
Code: Select all
affb1168eb588efdb642c68a8b9015e5  alamo1.pk3
00687d589a1d8aac7c5b6d8901092adb  joekarimat1.pk3
d9047e628c69c3fdf0cdce78a4c40400  sg_maps0.pk3
54fddb96d909d4197af0e2cdfd82a2aa  sg_pak0.pk3

Those are in the smokinguns directory.
Here's the md5sum for the pak0.pk3 file in the baseq3 directory:
Code: Select all
82c521b33c251dd1421f81b3039a41bd  pak0.pk3

Yeah, I've been running World of Padman with no problems on setup or anything. BTW, I'm running Smokin' Guns from my /home/username directory. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Smokin' Guns stand-alone, and thus doesn't need to be in any particular place to run?

It doesn't matter where you install SG, as long as fs_homepath and fs_basepath are correct. By default, the engine uses ~/.smokinguns as home- and ./ as basepath (relative to engine's folder).

Since you got World of Padman running, I assume graphics acceleration works fine.

The default v1.0 installation of SG should also include sg_sounds.pk3 and sg_textures0.pk3, did you forget to list them?
I think the problem is that your sg_pak0.pk3 seems to be corrupted, since this is where the relevant ui file is stored.
Try redownloading Smokin_Guns_1.0.zip, which has md5sum 6e6a980bd057e9241c66b7324729c7b9

Hm, yeah, I was wondering why I didn't have any sound or texture .pk3s. I don't have any problems with graphics acceleration. I'll re-download Smokin' Guns and post what happens.
