Monitor flicker on Linux?

Postby ReD NeCKersoN » Tue Sep 27, 2011 2:47 am

EDIT: Moved my topic to the correct forum.
I don't know squat about Linux & this guy doesn't seem interested in posting on our forum. But I thought I would ask for help here & pass any responses on to this fellow.... since he's trying to help distribute SG on Desura. Although he doesn't mention which version he is trying to run on Linux I assume it's 1.0, but I sent a pm to him & asked just now. So we'll see which version he is having trouble with & I'll report back.

Hi I'm Tim the Linux Game Lead here at Desura. I was trying to get your game up and running to post it on the Desura system. The problem we have encountered on several systems is that the game flickers like mad. I am on a 3gigz quad core system with a Radeon 6850 and a LCD monitor. If you could check in to this and get back to me I would appreciate it.

It happened on 3 different systems here. My two systems and two of the developers' systems which is why we have not activated the Linux version here yet. I am running the latest Raedon drivers and have no problems with any other games.

Thanks for any replies from our Linux users.

I use Linux, and had probably the same problem playing SG on an ATI system with Radeon graphic card. I solved the problem disabling Openal library in q3config.cfg (seta s_useOpenAL "0").

Hope this could be of some help.

It seems odd that openal might cause that because openal is for audio.

Did linux even get version 1.0? I thought that started after SG was ported onto the ioq3 engine.

Either way.

Yes, I know that openal is for audio, and that this seems odd... But I coudn't play SG in that laptop until I disabled it (I think that to make it work, I tried changing every parameter in q3config, one at a time, until I discovered that disabling openal did the trick).

Linux has both SG versions 1.0 and 1.1b4. I noticed the problem using SG 1.0. Don't know if SG 1.1b4 fixed the problem.

any ideas?

What SG version are you running? SG1.0 or SG1.1b4? Install and try the other one!

What processor are you using? AMD or Intel?

Is your system x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit pure) or both (multilib)?

If you use x86, and SG continues to crash despite using the other executable, the fault, if it is located inside SG, is most likely triggered by your display driver / OpenGL-like graphic library. Which graphic card and which driver do you exactly use? Please try to update / downgrade your driver / OpenGL-like graphic library.

The error message you provide could mean anything. We/you would need to build a debug executable and run it via gdb. This is very difficult due to the modular structure of SG and even I would not attempt it to compile it before I tried anything else. Also note, we don't have any resources to solve difficult problems at the moment.

If this helps...
I have random crashes too. I have ever had crashes since I upgraded to SG beta. But I don't know where should I watch for debug infos. Some days there is no crash, and some days 3 crashes in half an hour.

I'm on an Intel, 32 bit machine, NVidia graphic card (that I don't want to upgrade/downgrade ... you know, it's not so easy in Linux ... better an SG crash than an unusable system), and SG beta. I hadn't crashes with SG 1.0, so Openal is active.

The SG1.0 and SG1.1b4 executables do not produce useful output.

That does not prove anything. Both executables of SG run fine for me, for example. It may be the combination of game and drivers that activate bugs.

If you are convinced that sound is the issue, try to play without sound to see whether it makes a difference. You could try to unload the audio drivers / recompile your kernel, but maybe it suffices to type into the console:
\seta s_musicvolume "0"
\seta s_volume "0"
\seta cg_musicvolume "0"

UPDATE:
Protektor (mentioned in the first post) replied to me & reports he is using SG version 1.0
He has not mentioned any crash problems, only an irritating screen flicker on 3 different linux machines. Please see first post for additional info.
Windows 95 wrote:Its weird when music in game freez and my game crashes.

I've had that happen on other games many years ago using Windows. If your music goes into an annoying loop & the game freezes, your sound card or audio drivers are possible culprits... at least in my experience with Windows. Don't know if the same applies to linux but I would assume so.

Something else just occurred to me. Is it possible the default monitor refresh rate for version 1.0 might cause the flicker problem mentioned in the first post? (Just throwing that out there.)

I have had the weirdest stuff going on playing smoking guns. Xserver crashes, screen looking like pixel explosion, etc.

As usual (had lots of trouble before), the problems were caused by some buggy nvidia driver. So i finally got myself a video card with an amd/ati chip and everything is smooth as never.

90% of the Xserver problems i ever encountered or i fixed for friends, were due to faulty nvidia drivers. So my very personal advice for anyone ... dont get a nvidia video card if you are on linux and want 3D acceleration. Chances the drivers are f*cked up now or will be at some point are high.

Right now amd/ati offer a WAY better support for linux. phoronix.com has reviews about driver support and performance for linux for almost every video card btw.

If you've been bad - Lord I bet you have

And you've not been hit by flying lead

You'd better close your eyes, bow your head

Wait for the ricochet

I don't know which Nvidia card you had or how old it was, but my experience is the opposite of yours. Talking about graphic cards, ATI and Intel have always had bad Linux support, Nvidia excellent.
