How to mute another player?

Postby Ash » Thu Apr 19, 2012 2:35 pm

Can someone please tell me is it possible to mute a player ingame?
Lately a player named the_ugly has been making it very difficult to enjoy playing this great game and while I don't mind taking him on I am very very tired of listening to his never ending tirade of insults and swearing. Over the last week or so I have talked to several other players who feel the same and I have seen other players just give up and leave, which is a real shame because this game needs more new players. I have heard that he has been banned from some servers but I guess he just changes the color of his name and comes back.
anyways, thanks a lot in advance

Hi, Ash. He is a well known insulting player, more than one time he had been muted by administrators (as a simple player you cannot mute him) and also banned for periods of time. Do you remember in which server you met him?

He is a fuckin bastard, I think he played this game earlier but changed his location and now thinks to interrupt this game. He will never stop to insult and teamkill.
Bodie's opinion is the only one which makes sense.

Thanks for the replies fellas

Hi Biondo, It has been in Paladin where I have seen him the most lately and unfortunately you can't vote there so he can't be kicked. I have also seen him once or twice in Baller Bude but when I saw his name show up in my Monster Browser I just chose not to enter.

Hi Bodie, That would be great to see him banned everywhere, I mean, it is a great game and I would feel a little bad that someone couldn't enjoy it, but there seriously is no reasoning with the man. When you try to talk to him like a normal person you just get spit on (figuratively speaking of course)I wonder if maybe he has some mental issues.

Hi Bart202, I agree completely 100%. He is a total bastard, and though I know it is best not to feed a troll and I always try just to keep my mouth shut and play, sometimes I can't help but get angry and swear right back at him, which of course, is probably exactly what he wants. From this moment on I will try my hardest just to keep silent and kill him as much as I can.

hello Ash,
you cant mute him, but you can disable chat while he is playing.
Therefor you can type /cg_chatTime 0 in your console and after he has left the server and you want to read the chat again set it back to the default value of 4000.
Personally i prefer laughing about his accusations and kill him so long until he ragequits 8D.

Did anyone bother to check if we can callvote mute in 1.1? :-)

If you have rcon, you can:
/rcon mute <client ID>

But players can't vote to mute one of them, can they?

Lucky worshipper, thou have been heard...

In SVN r639, you can:

- /callvote mute <player name>
- /callvote unmute <player name>
(unlike /mute and /unmute, it use the player name, not the client's ID - but it is converted in ID internally, so renaming wont allow one to escape)
- /callvote clientkick <client ID> is now deprecated, use /callvote kicknum <client ID> [reason] instead
- cvar g_maxVote: maximum number of vote someone could call (vote counter is reset on next map)

Also:
- cvar g_voteMinLevelTime replace g_allowVoteLevelTime (more explicit name)
- cvar g_voteDelay replace g_allowVoteDelay (more explicit/better/shorter name)

And lastly, but very interesting feature:
- A muted player cannot call a vote

Now I have to go, I have a week-end to enjoy :D

See ya monday folks!

I'd guess, until he reconnects ;-). Similar to bans, one would need a list or database and a piece of additional code to enforce mutes for a longer period of time. The perl script, for instance, could be extended to cover that.

Why can't players mute each other on a personal level?
After all it's my decision whether I think someone is spamming, offensive or in any other way annoying. No need for a public vote to pass to mute him. If such a vote passes, on the other hand, one might consider kicking or banning the offending player entirely instead.

I think we discussed "ignore" ages ago somewhere and then nothing ever came out of this. Ignore doesn't help that much, as the guy will keep insulting you even if you don't read it, which isn't satisfactory for most people. I think this kind of "lynch" mute by other players is justice best served.

I'd keep this mute for a while (until next map?) on server level, just like we can limit the amount of votes per person per allocated time. If reconnect is enough to shake it off, it won't be worth much, will cost the guy his cash and frags though.
