Footstep sounds when walking downstairs

Postby hika » Fri Sep 15, 2006 1:12 am

I don't know if an old forum thread was already opened for that.

Anyway, in bug database, torhu reports that "There is no sound when walking up stairs, so why is there sound when walking down?".
I'm wondering if sound should be triggered or not, when moving down, ducked, without pressing the walk button.
Also, does the sound should be triggered when walking down backwards ?
In my opinion, when moving backwards, there should not be any sound, only when ducked. It seems more realistic.

I need your opinions before doing any fixes.
Thanks.

I think backward and forward should be the same. In real life, you would be able to turn your head to see. And ducked or not probably shouldn't matter. Making it depend only on speed and nothing else makes it easy to know when you are being silent. Simple is good. That's my opinion.

Crouching and walking is the same speed, by the way.

My opinion is that there shouldn't be any sound when you're walking or crouching at all. Whatever if you're walking up or down or wherever.
This makes it easier to sneak up the campers.

I agree with Hellrider. No sounds when walking or crouching, except if you fall or something.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here, but it seems that when you walk down stairs your player model "falls" with each step. This is why you make noise going down but not up. Walking down the ramp in the brick building of HighNoon2 makes no sound. Just fyi if it helps.

Red is right. If you make the stairs the right dimensions you get foot steps up and down (stairs in pardners map). If you don't, then you only get sound when going down cause your falling..

Yeah, this is something I have noticed too.
In the mod code, this is a very very short fall that always happens when moving downstairs, in most of the maps (I tried wq_mine, wq_nightfort).
No fall on ramp.

Thanks for all the info.
I will make the "no sound" fix when walking, crouching, either backward or forward moving.
There will be some case where walking downstairs will make the player fall by more than 2 steps (wq_nightfort). Then, it is obvious that the sound will be triggered.
So the player have to make sure to walk down step by step.

I think a patch will probably come today 8)

Ok, I have something new about that, in my bag. 8)
Check the bug database as I will update this task's progress.
Now, stealth killing will be more fun.

Enjoy !
