Requirements before adding new servers in bootblock

Postby hika » Sat May 27, 2006 2:08 am

Is there any requirements before I can add my home server in bootblock ?

Even if I have not a static IP address, I use a DynDNS that works great.
My upload bandwidth is ~50kB/s.

I still not know if this is enough ...

I haven't got a static ip, too. But it worked. I have got an upload of 384kbit/per second.... (and next month 800kbit/sec)

And it worked...

Just try it!

See ya

Yep, I had a 384kb/s (~48kB/s) before, so I had limited the upload bandwidth in my router to preserve some bandwith for download acknowledgement.
I just have done an upload test today, without the router's upload limitation, and my surprise is that the bandwidth is ~ 90kB/s ! 8O

I guess my ISP has upgraded this, one day :)
So I think I will try to add my server in bootblock.

There are no requirements whatsever to get listed on that page ... well, excpet for running WQ3 ;-) ... If you start a dedicated server with "+set dedicated 2", i.e. you report to ID's master server, bootblock will pick it up within about half an hour anyways.

Now, about the feasibility of running a server on a DSL line: I did it myself some years ago, and also Red did it some time ago. IIRC, you need about 3-5 KByte/sec per player - and yes, the bottleneck is your upload speed.
Furthermore, bootblock.de will track by IP, not by name (which can change, too), so if you run a server on a dynamic IP, it will show history only for the current IP (but the old pages may actually stay on the server for much longer ... so, if you know your old IP's you can recall them ;-) ...)

Hmm ... so a dynamic IP address can be problematic about history ...
For history, do you mean the RRDTool graphics ?

About the old IPs, I don't quite understand what you mean :| , but I do have logs about old IPs and any possible autoreconnections.

... I see
I guess that servers with dynamic IP might pollute bootblock ? :|

Anyway, is it problematic to have such servers ?
I don't want to bother bootblock 's sysadmins ... :)

nah, that's no pollution, don't worry ! :-) it's not problematic at all !

BTW, if you have't realized, I am bootlock.de's admin ;-) ... and I could remove these old pages. In fact, there is some defunct code that could delete these old files automatically, but currently I don't worry about these few bytes.

Yeah, I was not sure about that, but there are some hints like your signature or the fact that you know how bootblock works ...
I think I will add my new server, very soon 8)
