Unreal Development Kit Released for FREE!

Postby dbozan99 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:09 am

The Unreal Development Kit has been released for FREE for all non-commercial purposes!!

http://www.udk.com/

Now I'm not suggesting a move to the UDK. Mainly because it's based off of the UT3 engine which would probably require a complete rewrite of the entire game and require a fairly decent computer to even play it.... But is still cool none-the-less...

Too bad they didn't release the Unreal 1 or 2 engine also....

Nice! Since the SG code is open, I don't see anything stopping some ambitious team from porting to this if they wanted to. The game data would need to be recreated anyway for aesthetic reasons if nothing else.

Thanks for the link dzoban99.

But from the Documentation page:
Will my UDK program run on Mac, iPhone, PS3 or Xbox 360?
As of right now, UDK is a Windows-only program. Please see our licensing page if you would like to discuss using UDK for cross-platform use.

What a shame :(

And by the way, this is a SDK... You still need their engine binary to play.

Wait, it doesn't come with an engine binary? That's stupid....How do they expect people to play their games?

I assume this requires a licensed copy of the game, i.e. you need to buy Unreal first.

Makes it kinda unattractive for Smokin' Guns

Edit:
http://www.udk.com/documentation.html wrote:I’ve been making mods for Unreal Tournament 3. How does UDK differ from the UT3 editor?
You can create standalone applications with UDK. This means that users will be able to install and run your game without owning a copy of Unreal Tournament 3.
