Monster Browser 0.9 is released

Postby torhu » Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:24 am

Time for a new release! I was working on some major changes this summer, but they are not quite ready yet. So this is more of a minor release, but it does contain the new, much nicer icon that Biondo made

Downloads and additional information.
Project page with source code, etc.

Changes in this version:
- New: A new application icon, made by Biondo.
- New: A setting to decide what MB does on startup or when a game is selected for the first time. The default is to refresh the list, like before.
- New: Added default settings for Urban Terror 4.2.
- New: Support non-ASCII characters in settings.ini and mods.ini.
- Change: Set fs_game based on the server's game cvar when launching the game, not on the mod setting from mods.ini.
- Change: Don't repopulate the game list dropdown unless mods.ini was edited. Check the file modification time to know.
- Fix: Crash if set to start with the first game in the list.
- Fix: Report the error if unable to create mods.ini. Related to the issue some people were having on Windows XP.
- Fix: Fixed a bug that caused getting new servers to fail when running on Wine.
- Fix: Remove some potentials hangs when interrupting the Qstat process.
- Fix: Fixed a bug with the Add Server dialog.
- Fix: Some minor fixes and corrections.

I usually kill and restart Explorer to get updated icons, but it's possible that simply logging out and in again works for those who don't like "drastic" solutions

I managed to create a last-minute bug before the release, so I have released version 0.9a. If you only use it for SG, you probably won't notice the bug, though

My SG isn't in program files folder. Where I can change it?
Tried to change game configuration but I'm missing mods.ini.

What do you mean by missing? Did you click the button in Settings inside MB?

Yep. Sunny gave me the mods.ini
Then I changed the location of my SG but it didn't work..
I moved my SG folder to program files.. It was easier.
(MB works now)

If the registry key that contains the path to SG is present, but doesn't match where the game is installed, that will trick MB. One way to fix that would be just to comment out the regKey value and set the correct value for exePath, which will be used instead. Or even better, run the SG uninstaller, then install again.

After two years I figured out my problem: why Monster Browser still tries to find smokinguns.exe from program files folder after I have had set the path for smokinguns.exe to another location.

The thing that caused my problem was called portable.txt

When Monster Browser finds this file (portable.txt), it will run in portable
mode. In this mode, all settings and data files are stored in the same folder
as MonsterBrowser.exe.

Another words the portable.txt file says: I should have installed the MB in the same folder as the SG is installed.

So I decided to delete that scumbag file and MB finally listens the custompath of my smokinguns.exe

I think I can clear some things up:
The ZIP file download is a "portable" installation by default, which just means it contains the file portable.txt. This file triggers portable mode, meaning MB will read and write settings and data in the same folder as the executable is located. This way you can install MB on a memory stick if you want.

If you click on "Game configuration" in the Settings menu, it should always give you the correct file.

In other words, you don't need to put MB in the game folder.

Hope this helps

Oh. Today, Google announced that they will discontinue their google code hosting platform.
Since Monster Browser is using this platform, I just wanted to let you know about this news.

You can read a bit more in their open source blog:
http://google-opensource.blogspot.ch/20 ... -code.html
There is a migration tutorials towards other platforms (github, bitbucket, sf, ...)

I also remember there is a command called git-svn that can convert your svn repo to a local git copy. From there, you can push to a newly created remote.

There's an "Export to GitHub" button. It seems like anyone can start it, I've just clicked it :) --> https://github.com/robo9k/monsterbrowser (I'll delete that lateron)
The issues weren't imported (correctly|at all) https://code.google.com/p/monsterbrowser/issues/list neither were branches or tags (they're just flat folders).

I could upload my local Mercurial repository (which has correct tags and branches) to the Bitbucket project. But as there's no development activity now, I still haven't bothered

Everything is up to you, just do not lose the source code if your hard drive fails and just try to keep the source code and the latest build available for download in case someone needs it.

I also used the tool given to convert the old repo to my GitHub account "just in case something goes wrong in the next upcoming years".

Am I forgetting anything to backup before Google Code's shutdown?
Oh, right, in the worst case scenario, the guys over at archive team just made a wiki page to plan to backup the site before its shutdown (http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Google_Code).
