Beta 2.2 testpatch 03 changelog

Postby torhu » Sat Oct 14, 2006 6:24 pm

The download is here.

New since b21_testpatch02
------------------------

*** NEW ***
- You can now go into spectator mode and then rejoin, without losing your score.
- Ammo counts displayed in weapons choose menu.
- Ability to select either one of two pistols of the same kind.

*** CHANGED ***
- Can now replace both pistols with lesser ones without dropping the old ones. If you have two Peacemakers, buying two Schofields to replace them will work without having to drop the last Peacemaker.
- If you have two pistols of the same kind and press the dropweapon key, the one with the least ammo left will be dropped, instead of always the one in your left hand.
- Weapon and item prices have been tweaked.

*** FIXED ***
- The "team" command exploit that let you respawn in BR and RTP.
- Bots can't see through doors anymore.
- The individual score sometimes got reset in BR and RTP. In this testpatch, a message will be printed when the score would have been reset, if it weren't for the fix. This is just for testing purposes.
- Don't play "no ammo" sound when you are out of dynamites.
- Fixed a bug with weapon changing that would cause an infinite sound loop.
- The slowdown while reloading feature works for both guns in akimbo mode now.

And since I'm even online right now, I've already put it on my test server.

If I understood some earlier discussions right, I beleive this is already more or less RC1 - at least game wise, right ?

This was supposed to be RC1, but because of the new data files and the major new weapon selection feature, I didn't call it that. Just in case. ;)

I forgot to mention this in the first post.

The new data files are spread between all three pk3 files in this patch. They are replacement files for the vanilla baseq3/pak0.pk3, and are needed for the standalone to work.

We figured it was best that players using the mod version have to use the same data files as the standalone users do. This way everyone will have the same experience when it comes to graphics and sounds.

So we're also interested in getting feedback for this part of the patch. Feel free to provide improved files that we can use, if you are unhappy with something.

First impressions:

- I like the new ammo display.
- The chat sound sounds like something straight out of an old 8-bit Atari game. Please, please change it.
- The fonts are ugly. I'll take screenies later, if needed.
- The sounds are very tinny (as in, canned). At least, they are with OpenAL enabled. I'm using an Audigy 2, so it's certainly not my sound card. I do have headphones, but the sound was just fine in the previous mod testpatch.

I don't mean to be overly negative, but those are the things I noticed right away. :)

It should be mentioned that Caffeine is testing with IoQ3. Everything is fine for me with our SA. I have to agree that the new chat sound is something from the 80's though.

errhh ... but you as SA tester should know the fonts. And yes, I agree that ID's font is nicer, but I find the current one already improved. But OTOH, we do need such feedback. I'm already used to the ugly font ;-)

All of them ? If not, which ones ? We exchanged only very few which are prominently audible.

As I said, at least I am already used to some new sounds and looks.

I'm playing at 800x600, and the new font doesn't look that good.

Just like the SA, I have only one problem with fonts :
Any font character is a bit "taller" than ID's, and the top of the character is a bit truncated (at least in my 1024x768 screen).
That's a bit problematic to read texts.

About ugly or not, I don't have any problem : You know, I'm not really sensitive about this kind of graphic details.
Maybe it is specific to coders

No no .... it sucks ....

I've always played at 1152x864 (for me the resolution hardly makes any difference in FPS at all, so I play at a high resolution) and there it looked ok. If I had tried earlier at lower resolutions .... oh well ...

Anyways, I've bit the bullet and tossed OA's font. I've created a new one from scratch now. After all the experience from massaging the current font, it wasn't that hard after all. It looks much better now.

Exactly, I'm not an artist, I'm a coder ... ...

I didn't have a problem with the sounds. They seem to be the same quality as always.

you guys are way too fast for an ol' man like me to catch up with all the fancy new stuff you come up with ;) ... Sometimes I wish torhu would still be alone tinkering with the code ... ... this new pace of changing the testpatches, the SA, the texture and content stuff ... wew!

When was the last time WQ saw that much progress? 2002? 2003?

I really like the new ammo display. And all the other stuff as well  ... I guess we have our beta2.2 then ...
