Hi guys, some good news for those using the Icculus ioquake3 engine. I guess this could be a majority of linux quake users now.

The news is you don't need the official (and frequently pirated) pak0.pk3 to play WQ3. Just make a link or a copy of your wq3_pak0.pk3 to where your quake engine expects the original pak0.pk3 and off you go.

I keep all of the quake files in my ~/.q3a directory, so the following is sufficient:

Code: Select all
ln -s ~/.q3a/westernq3/wq3_pak0.pk3 ~/.q3a/baseq3/pak0.pk3

I did not test this on windows or MacOS X, so please report succeses or failures here. Myself, I'm on quake3-1.34_rc3 at the moment with Gentoo Linux.

Now the last bit of pirated software is gone from my OS :-).

Looks like Red Neckerson has already reported that. I must have missed, sorry about the noise.

Hmmm, yeah I may have mentioned that WQ3 works with IoQ3 on the news page back in November but I didn't go into details about it. This would be a good place for discussion if other people want to try it or have questions. :)

I have never extensively tried ioq3, especially not lately. But last time I checked their code it looked like you should not be able to play on-line. But hey, if it works :D

Me and most of my friends have been using it online for at least the last six or nine months. It does not work with PunkBuster (for obvious reasons), but otherwise it seems to work better (OpenAL audio and things) than the original binary distribution.

I have tried this trick, yesterday with ioquake3 1.34-rc3, on FreeBSD, with no success.
The error message is something about invalid checksum.
(I don't have the exact message in mind, sorry).

I have to mention that I only try with "+set dedicated 1".

This is the message I got
Code: Select all
**************************************************
WARNING: pak0.pk3 is present but its checksum (1624030397)
is not correct. Please re-copy pak0.pk3 from your
legitimate Q3 CDROM.
**************************************************

but, shame on me, it works, even with the WARNING message.
The reason why I had the problem, yesterday, was because of a missing "default.cfg".
