2009 Smokin' Guns Tournament

Postby Pardner » Fri Mar 06, 2009 8:38 pm

***Tourney Page***

This purpose of this thread is both for tournament information and tournament discussion. Feel free to discussion anything about the tourney here, but please see below on how to register you and/or your team.

  • Date: April25th
  • Server: Deviant Pointer SG1.0
  • Gametype: 4vs4 bank Robbery
  • Rules
  • To sign up: Send me a personal message. Send me:
    • Player name
    • Teammate's names
    • Time Zone

A couple little things to start the discussion (note: everything is subject to change):

*Here is the thread from the last two years (2007, 2007,2007, 2008). Please feel free to post your suggestion, especially for those of your who participated last year. My aim is to have things go smoother this year, but I know there is sure to be mistakes.

*Like last year, send me a PM to sign your team up. If you dont have a team I will place you on a "pick-up" team. If you find a team later, thats fine.

*A slight change this year. The tournament will be not run on the WASTELANDS server. This year the server will be passworded. You will receive your password when you sign you and/or your team up.... so make sure your entire team gets the password. I have not decided which server to run the tourney on. It will most likey be one of the following: smokinguns.fr, RAWHIDE, or Deviant Pointer. It has to be a sever where the referees can have rcon access. It will be held on Deviant Pointer SG1.0

*Also, the maps will be chose at random. Basically, the maps will be chose in the order that they appear in the map rotation. This will reduce the amount of delay spend on choosing a map. And, it also rules out any one getting and advantage (or disadvantage) by playing on their favorite (or least favorite) map.

*This year I hope to have more players join our little competition. This means that we may need to split the tourney into two days. The tourney starts Saturday morning The start time hasn't been defined, but like the previous years, i will be grouping contestants into time zones that way no one has to get up too early and stay up too late.. I will let everybody know if we need to extend the tourney into Sunday.

*More players means that I may need to be less lenient on the rules, especially the start/finish time. This year I want to try having warm-up times; this way people have time to leave/ join before the actual match starts. Please know when to show up and leave when you are supposed to. This will make the tourney much easier and keep my blood pressure down!!

*The SG staff and I will be refereeing and our word is final. BUT remember, this tourney is for fun! So please, enjoy yourself!!!

The reason for that is because there are always one or two players who take what is supposed to be a friendly competition way too seriously. :?

As for cheating, that's a tough thing to prove even though we know what to look for. We will use discretion if anything questionable comes up.

Servers. I almost hate to even bring this up since everyone hates high ping. We've held the last two tourneys in Europe, to the dismay of American players. Now it seems we have a fairly large number of Brazillian players lately. I'm wondering if Deviant Pointer in Canada might be a good compromise for everyone? I guess we'll have to wait & see who signs up.

Even though it's 4vs4, I liked having 5 players per team last year which allows one spectator per team. Then if someone loses connection (or doesn't show up) the 5th player can fill the empty spot. If all 5 show up, players could rotate who spectates between rounds so that each gets a chance to play.

Yes, it will be.

And I will need the "last sign up date" too, weekends are a little difficult for me staying online. :|

I like this idea, and I have no problem with doing it again this year. I looked back at last years results and there were two teams that had 5 players. I will update the rules when I get a chance.

Aaaah, this is great news!
mS clan will be joining for sure, I will send you official sign up later.

Some suggestions:
About the american/europe server discussion: I am sure you could get both an american as an european server.
For the first and maybe second round you can just let the american and europeans play eachother as far as it is possbile.

For the final, if it is an American vs European final we can play half on USA and half on EU server

Providers like jeuxlinux.fr will maybe provide a private server just for this cup if you ask nicely. Or just password their public server for a while

Gameplay suggestions:
I only had a quick look at the rules and it seems like one match will be played on one map only?
Other suggestions are the ones I posted in my other topic about gameplay changes, like the stopwatch mode.(dont know when the new patch is planned)

It all depends on the amout of people who sign up. If there are enough people we could do a European Vs Americas. The main reason for keeping it on only one sever is to avoid confusion. If I have learned one thing from past evens, its that there will be plenty of confusion!

smokinguns.fr is also located in France. Is there a ping difference? For the tourney it doesnt matter what server is the most popular either because the only people who will be playing will be the people signed up. If we hold the tourney on the smokinguns.fr, it frees up the popular servers for public play durring the tourney.

Yes, the qualifiers are one map BR matches. This year the maps will be chosen at random.

I dont know when the patch will be released. Either way, I would like to stick with a gametype that everybody is familiar with.

New patch is a ways off and I can almost safely say that there won't be any major game play changes (stopwatch mode) in the patch.

Updated rules, and added our first contestant!

Each team will be limited to 5 members. The matches will be 4vs4, therfore each team may only have 4 members playing at a time, and 1 floater. This floater may be used to rotate players or cover a player with connection troubles.

Yes, that's my experience, too. When you factor in time zones from Germany to the western United States, it gets very confusing. Might be okay if there's another duel tournament, but getting ten players together at one time is hard.

The Beer-Garden server is located in Texas, that could be used I am sure. Either way this will be fun :)
