i was just wondering, what is the difference between western quake 3 and smokin guns?

Western Quake 3 - is a modification, which depends on the Quake 3 Arena. That is, start by:

quake3 +set fs_game westernq3


Without Quake 3 Arena, you can not play in Western Q3.

Smokin' Guns - No need to install Quake 3, just as in games Open Arena, Urban Terror and etc.

Use different engines:
WQ3 - quake3
SG - ioquake3 (used with version 1.1b).

Western Quake 3 is where Smokin' Guns started. WQ3 was created by Iron Claw Interactive (if you search the username Spoon you will see their logo). Like dansh said, WQ3 is a mod for Quake 3 and required Quake 3 to be install in order to play.

Smokin Gun's Production picked up the mod, supported it for a few years, then released a stand alone version (SG1.0) using the Quake 3 engine. SG1.1 is using the IoQ3 engine (still Quake3, but supported by the good folks at IoQ3).

• Our first release was WQ3 beta 2.1 in November 2005
• Then WQ3 beta 2.2 in November 2006
• Name change to Smokin' Guns in June 2007
• SG 1.0 released on January 1, 2009
