Hi,

the host/the server of Baller Bude is currently down. I've contacted @spi, the owner, to investigate.

Best regards,

It was a surreal experience for me to play SG after so long. The first thing I felt when I entered the game was fear, I was in the tunnel of I don't know which map, half trapped between crates, it was dark, I could see very little (I have always played with picmip 9 and dark environments are not the best). I open my eyes and there is a menacing monster in front of me. Instinctively I open fire to save my life without realising that I'm inside a game, it doesn't even cross my mind to wonder if what I have in front of me is a bot or a player, I just have to save my life and I shoot. I only realised in retrospect that maybe I was facing @spi or another known player and that he was cavalierly sparing me. As a start it couldn't have been worse.
Then I start playing and bit by bit I remember that I can see the names of those in front of me, but I don't seem to know the maps I'm on. I look for the key combinations I was used to, but I don't remember them well and sometimes I get them right and sometimes I have to press random keys on the keyboard.

Is that really what I was? Was I really playing this game with so much passion? Why was I doing this? Why is it something alien to me today, something that makes no sense at all? Of course the game has not changed, so it is I who have changed.

If the one I killed at the start of the game was @spi I apologise to him. If it wasn't him, I apologise anyway. And finally, happy birthday Baller Bude!

Happy Birthday to Baller Bude!
Thanks for it being the most reliable server in town, with some very good people behind it for running it.
I dont know for what you're thanking me either, sorry I missed the game. Life's too busy!

Last time I saw someone here complain similarly was because the web page served mixed http/https content.

Try this link directly: http://download.smokin-guns.org/Smokin_Guns_1.1.zip

Hi guys,

this is to inform you that the Baller Bude Smokin'Guns server will close on December 31, 2025 8O !

Not coincidentally, this is the date when the company combahton.net, which had been hosting the server until now, is discontinuing its cloud offering.

Baller Bude was founded on November 9, 2009, by @spi. Under sometimes hair-raising conditions, @spi managed to keep this service available and free of charge to us for years, initially hosted on-premise, and later on combahton.net.

Now, after more than 16 years, this chapter is coming to an end. Nevertheless I am proud to have been part of it. I would like to especially thank @spi, who trusted me many years ago, even though he had and still has never met me in person and does not know my real name. He granted me full administrative control over the server, enabling servers like Baller Bude, Special Bude, as well as short-lived servers like Terra Nova (map test server) and Screw OA (Open Arena Corkscrew server). I thank all people who contributed to these servers or SG in general, especially Biondo who once was a co-admin of BB, who designed the Smokin'Guns webpage and contributed many graphics to BB, and Tequila, who basically runs the Smokin'Guns webpage. I'm grateful to the (previous) administrators of other servers who cooperated, when had problems with cheaters, especially Bodie and Barto. Last but not least, I thank all honest players of Baller Bude, especially the long time legends who managed to surpass over 100.000 kills!

Best regards,

TheDoctor

[December 31, 2025. Coincidentally BB and I are retiring together].

This news comes unexpectedly — or perhaps I should say it was expected for many years — but the brave and relentless resistance of Baller Bude had always overcome every difficulty placed in its path, even those that required hard choices.

I also want to thank all the players who played honestly and respectfully toward others for contributing to a kind of fun that was truly unique.

And of course, I thank @aspi and Tequila in particular, and with them many many players/mates that I don't want to name here, but they know who they are.

And then thanks to The Doctor. He taught me so much and trusted me more than I trusted myself. Even after so many years away from Smokin’ Guns, I have not forgotten that exciting period of learning, discovery, wonder, and sharing. I wish all future players, of any game, the chance to find an administrator (and a community) so sensitive, generous, and welcoming.

In keeping with my usual style, I would have liked to leave you with something visual — perhaps humorous, certainly with a smile — but those days have passed, and my brush has dried out a bit. So, let me just say: Long live Baller Bude!

The Baller Bude galaxy has been a big part of the Smokin' Guns history. It was the main server doing deathmatch games. Well managed, perfect tooling, always on the bleeding edge, with a nice website to power it all! I can only thank it for all those years of fun it provided.

Other servers, let me name them, were jeuxlinux.fr for bank robbery games (hosted on OVH), Rawhide for our US folks, or High Noon for the lover of weird low gravity games.

I'm not much of a deathmatch person, as I much preferred to rob banks, but this is where I met you Biondo and learned to appreciate you. You were one damn tough guy to beat let me tell you. My wallpaper on that old laptop I'm using right now is still one made by your son, and I hope he's doing great.

Remember when @spi shut off the server a couple of days so that it could sneak past an audit?

I will always have a fond memories on this game. We were very much all working together for a better experience. It's all the friends we made along that are important, and boy we did make some. Some, seriously, I can still thank to this day because it is likely that I would not be the same person today.
Certainly thanks to all who helped power it for that long.

We've never talked much together 'Doc, but boy I am impressed on all the work you've done here. I would have loved to see your code merged and maintained, but the hands for it were scarce, and nobody are paid for this.

Biondo wrote:[December 31, 2025. Coincidentally BB and I are retiring together].

I would have loved to send you some chocolate for the occasion, but it seems last time the two people I sent to you couldn't convince the person at your gate about my plan

We've got 15 days to backup things in here for archival.
So far I see that you're pulling maps from download.smokin-guns.org (mirror.9k.lv previously) and I trust Téquila to keep it safe. I've thrown a friendly little crawler named ArchiveBot on bb.smokin-guns.org to save it all on Internet Archive's wayback machine  It's saving a lot of demos right now. Let me know if I'm too heavy on the bandwidth.

Maybe it's time for me to show up one last time on the server before it shuts down...
