I came across the web site:

http://www.planetquake3.net

When looking at the MOD section I noticed that Western Quake 3 was not listed. To gewt more players here to play has anyone considered adding it to these sites? I know I would love to play more but it is better with real people instead of the BOTs

You're mistaken, wq3 can be found on planetquake, here is the url:
http://www.planetquake3.net/download.ph ... oad&sid=77

but it's true that wq3 still needs more advertisement.
btw in these days, we were more than ten on the german somewhere bank robbery server almost in every evening(CET evening :)), it seems to me, that wq3 scene is reviving. sadly its down now, and i dont know why.
but perhaps it'll be up soon, and you can join the fun too.

@ BITE_ME!! : If we ever ported wq3 to another engine, it would be to a new engine and not an aging one like RTCW.

@ aquarius: A standalone version of wq3 is something we want to do once the q3 source is released. Torhu has said he thinks he can do it without too much trouble. A port to a new engine is something we are only talking about at this point and is a long ways off.

@ El vAkonD: After Torhu gets back, we hope to complete the patch and a couple of new maps. Once they are finally released I will contact many gaming websites (like planetquake) and every member of the forum about the news. I will also re-release the wq3 movie at the same time and we might even have a new, small trailer showing off the mod. We expect our website will get a lot of hits for a few days following that but who knows how many new players we will get. Only time will tell. We were hoping to be ready for release by the end of summer but it could be a couple of more months before this happens.

ah- the infamous q3a source... well- it isn't suppose to come out for a while now- was sold off to another company- and- until that company releases w/e game they r plannin on makin with that source and that game hits the shelves- then maybe that company will release the source- were suppose to release it quite a few years ago, but- alas- here we are with no code, and won't have one for some time now... so- we are in for the long haul on q3a as it stands for the standalone option- i get around from one developing mod to the other- and currently- the whole q3a community is in a pickle- either porting their mods to new engines (which very few have done- cause only a few have had such funds or team work) or just sitting around waiting for that blasted code...

That's partly true. John Carmack wanted to release it at the beginning of this year, but at this time a new developer licensed the source code. To be a good "player" they didn't want to release the code just a few weeks after this new deal. So they pushed the release back, but they said they will not wait till the product of this new licensee is released. I expect it will be this xmas. The q3a engine is very old, there is no reason to hold it back any longer.

Guys here is some great news. John Carmack just announced that the source code will be released shortly. From PQ:

Hot off the presses folks, just announced moments ago, we've got awesome news out of camp QuakeCon where Pappy-R has just left the QuakeCon Keynote with John Carmack. The Quake III Arena source code will be released as soon as they can put it all together! It was also noted that the release "will not include any PunkBuster stuff in it". Watch for more news on the Q3 source release as it comes in!

The most noteworthy thing to come out of the keynote speech was a possible release date for the long awaited Quake 3 Arena source code. Barring things like getting the GPL license all squared away, Carmack told the crowd the Q3A source code could be released as early as next week.

Carmack said it could be released as early as next week 8O

wq3 and all the other long waiting mods have been waiting for that source a while now- we r not the only ones getting our community excited over this mother- if this turns out to be a dud-... q4 doesn't have much of a chance for success if all its hardcore q3a players boycott it...

Does this mean that with the code opened up that anyone can play WQ3 without buying a copy of Q3?

That would be awsome!
