bigping

Postby Pardner » Fri Dec 09, 2005 6:53 am

i have come to accept that my campus' internet is crap. when i play online i usually get a ping of 400 and up(usually 999). sometimes i get this error: "Delta parseEntitiesNum too old." filling up my consol.
i guess my question is
1) whats this error (assuming something to do with my serious lag) and
2) is there anyway to minimize my lag. i close all running progams that use CPU or internet, and i increased my hunk_megs. wq3 is running at good 125 fps.

oh yeah, ive got 6 other people to play wq3! only 4 of them play online though.

I think "Delta parseEntitiesNum too old" means that you've got a (temporary) connection problem. I get it too sometimes. Guess it could also mean the server has got a connection problem.

400 ping sounds really bad. Do you get that kind if ping in ASE too? If yes, then I don't know what you could do. There are some settings in q3 that can affect your ping, but I think you should be okay using the defaults. There are lots of tweak guides on the internet that deal with those settings.

I guess it's possible that a software firewall is slowing things down, so you might want to disable it and see.

Try checking the quality of your internet service at a free test site like http://myspeed.visualware.com
If it is horrible, then your modem could be malfunctioning or there is just way too much traffic on your campus. Ask your neighbors if they have trouble gaming online too.
Like Torhu mentioned, you can also tweak your q3config.cfg in the areas that pertain to packets and rate. Not sure that'll help much though.
A quick search on Google for that error yields a lot of links so do that and start reading. Good luck and hope you get it fixed! Let us know what you find out.

we seem to be getting some snow here in the northeast USA and theres no classes totady. The dorms also seem a little empty. i did the speed test, heres the results...
download speed 1.67Mbps
upload speed 1.97Mbps

i tried it half an hour later and
dl 263Kbps
ul 1.38Mbps

the speed seem to really fluctuate. i see this happen in game too. i was on RAWHIDE w/ 4 others and i had a ping of 150-200. next map 2 left and my ping went to 999. i guess ill have to live with it for a while. i could try tweaking my config, but i doubt that will help enough to bring a ping of 999 down to something playable.

I was one of the others on Rawhide, and it was a sad thing to see...your ping, that is.

I wonder if your university deliberately limits the bandwidth. I know that University of Washington here in Seattle limits bandwidth from the dorms ever since back in the Kazaa heyday because students were bogging down the whole UW system. Or so they claimed.

on friday night (12/9) i had the best ping on the server. at one pointit was down near 29. maybe they remove the bandwidth cap on fridays. unfortunitly, i dont usually play on friday nights ( i was a bit snowed in).
