Popularity?

Postby MisterX » Thu Nov 17, 2005 3:38 pm

At first I gotta say: Wow! Thanks and congratulations for continuing this legendary project. I loved to play WQ? when it was still played. It was really sad that it died out later. Now that you are continuing the development, how popular is it actually? I can't play WQ?, but it seems not many people know of it anymore. I was a great fan of this mod, and until tomorrow I didn't know it has been continued since months. And if the popularity is still pretty small, will you do something against it, like trying to do some kind of promotional campaign? :D I'd really love to see this mod being played more and more again, it's just the best for now.

And another thing: Do you, the guys of ICI, consider to develop this mod for another game? I guess it's pretty unrealistic, but until now I haven't seen a really remarkably western mod project being in development for Half-Life 2 or Quake 4 for example. There is one, Western Revenge (Schiette posted about it here several months ago), but it looks as if it'll never be finished, at least not by the current team. And I guess a newer "platform" would also open new ways for the mod.

We promoted the new version of the mod on several big-name gaming sites. As of today, it appears there have been around 3500 downloads of the full mod. Even with that, WQ3 game server activity has only increased by a small margin. :?

Heh... ICI is no longer active in developing this mod although we have their support. When the website was about to be shut down, I and a few fans decided to move the site and do our best to improve WQ3. We call ourselves The Smokin' Guns.
Our ultimate goal is to remove all Q3 copyrighted material from the mod and release a free stand-alone version of the game along with a handful of brand new maps. (You won't need Q3 installed to play it anymore.) At that time, the WQ3 source code will be re-released. Anything that happens after that is speculation.
There has been some talk about the possibility of "Western Quake 4" but only time will tell. 8O

I must have been one of those 3500 people. I found a link from the GameSpy Daily newsletter. I didnt play b1 one but i am having a blast with b2.1 . Im trying to get as many peoplei know to play.
The servers dont seem to popular. every time i join or view here on the sight, theres only bots.
Congrats on the cool mod! :D -SplashDamage

Ah, didn't know about that (obviously ;)). Nice to know :)

I gotta say, this idea sounds ingenious :o Free Multiplayer Shooters, like Enemy Territory or Nexuiz, are beloved. Now a free mp shooter, set in a western setting, with nice graphics, sweet sounds, a cool atmosphere and a fu**ing great gameplay... mmh :D

I don't recall the version number that this was at when I first downloaded it, but do remember that GL_DEPTH_TEST didn't appear to be enabled when drawing dropped items. I played 2.0 for a little while, even got it going at a lan party once, but now I just stop by to see how things are going every few months and was surprised to see a 2.1 release.

I think it's awesome that you guys are putting some work back into this mod. I'm looking forward to some good shootouts.

But please make sure, when it'll be released as a stand-alone program, that it'll get the promotion and attention it deserves :) Now that I play it again, even if only against bots, I really wish it'd be played again. And it doesn't look as if there's a good western mod be coming out in the next 12 months. And even then, I doubt it can be on the same quality level as this great mod. Here just everything fits.. The graphics are nice, the sound and music is great, the movement is sweet, the weapons are done incredibly well.. just the whole thing is ingenious :)

WQ3 and creaky old PCs

Postby DeUgli » Mon Nov 21, 2005 5:49 am

One aspect of WQ3 that is nice for me is that I have an old slow machine, and yet I can still run the mod. So many new games exceed my specs, so I'm grateful to be able to play an evolving mod that isn't too graphics-intensive.
