GOOD, BAD & UGLY

Postby DeUgli » Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:18 am

Thought I would post a few thoughts on WQ3. Take them for what they?re worth--

THE GOOD:

1. A tribute to one of my favorite genres and an important cultural reference, the spaghetti western.

2. A friendly (if small) gaming community. WQ3 is a labor of love, first by the Iron Claw folks and now by Red Neckerson and the gang. Thanks to all for keeping Western Quake alive!

3. Realistic weapon damage and no health packs. The damage factor is important to me because I?ve gotten disgusted with other games and mods where it is possible to empty an entire clip from an assault rifle (say) into a player and not take him out. WQ3: one good headshot and yer gone. Not having health packs livens up the strategy-- do I buy a shotgun when my health is 44?

4. Some of the animations are great. I love the fall a dead player takes off the roof. Just like the movies.

THE BAD:

1. Bots can see you and kill you through doors. (Even two doors, in the case of the Train map.) Of course, the fact that they always run (and thus make noise) evens things up.

2. I think weapon switching is too slow in the case of pistols. The whirling is fun, but frustrating when I?m in a fight.

THE UGLY:
These are just quibbles I made up to have an ?ugly? section. ;)

1. Realism is spoiled when the bots get stuck trying to get through windows.

2. Again, those bots. They don?t look very macho when they start bobbing up and down trying to figure out whether to crouch or not.

Well, wq3 is still officially in beta, so some problems are to be expected. The bot code just isn't quite finished yet. And it might never be, unless someone volunteers to actually do the work.

And maybe you should be able to fire sooner when switching to pistols. The weapon switching animation is interrupted if you switch to another weapon before it's completed. That didn't happen in b2.0. So firing could probably interrupt the animation too.

But after a while you get used to the delay, and you don't think about it, you just know exactly when to press fire. But maybe it'll change sometime.

Nice to see your opinion of the game. I've always been a HUGE fan myself...despite the imprefections.

it might. i know fireing interrupts the last part of the reload animation. when you done reloading one gun, you can fire both before you pull out the holstered one. looks a little weird because you shoot a gun that isnt there.

yes, this is one of the coolist mods that i have for quake3. i have had a blast at LANs and trying to play online. keep up the good work!

I agree. This mod is my favorite for Quake 3. One thing that would be cool in the future if anyone out there has the skills would be to see newer more realistic looking player models and skins - a longshot I know but one can dream - don't get me wrong - the ones we have are cool too
