New WQ3 skins (yeah, I wish...)

Postby dolny » Sun Feb 19, 2006 4:34 am

Has anybody tried making new models/skins for WQ3? Can anyone provide some good tools like md3 viewers, programs he would recommend etc. ? I tried to toy with the skins but it's impossible to do something only with Photoshop and lack of knowledge ;)

So, anybody ever tried skinning/modelling for Q3?

(PS. I tried 3 different md3 viewers - they all crash when I try to load md3 from WQ3)

I think this md3 viewer works, at least partially. Can't help you much except for that. It's java, but it didn't work with JRE 1.5, so i ran it with 1.3.1, and that worked. Didn't try JRE 1.4.

I've done skinning and modeling for Q3, but my skills at doing player skins are very limited. I have considered doing work for WQ3 before and was even hell-bent on doing some new player animations, but such is not in the cards now as time does not allow me to do such things. Sorry, mates. :|

If I sneak in some time on something though, I will pop it here. :P

Well, I just remebered there was another tease some while ago and I found it again:
http://www.westernquake3.net/viewtopic.php?t=427

He is refering to this forum:
http://sos.planetquake.gamespy.com/foru ... der=&pp=25

which is archived nowadays, but check out the topics "Chief Bear On Head" and the three with "western" in their title. Maybe he still is willing to share and whoever wants to do some WQ3 modeling in the end can get together ?!

I think the player models and skins are the only thing really lacking about WQ3. They're nice, but they could using some touching up. I know that finding a talented modeler or skinner is pretty hard though. I'm able to skin, but only for models using the Valve/Source Engine.

Bad news.

Showster told me that he has no time at all to work on a model or skin for WQ3...
Maybe I'll ask him about adding the indian model to WQ3 at least... but I doubt it.

As for the models/skins in WQ3: I love the animations, I love the 'bad' woman model + skin. I like almost all the other skins and models - they aren't of best quality when compared to newest games but... I don't know - I fear that changing them can ruin the atmosphere the game has. The two models I don't like are these guys in huge hats. Don't remember their name.

I tried to make a skin for an exisiting model but it sucked. I think it's very uncomfortable way of creating skins (the q3 way).

:( I wish we had a modeller/skinner in the WQ3 team.

I emailed a couple (more than 10) of guys some time a go but the majority of them didn't even reply. Others didn't have time.

Hmm. Perhaps with the next W3 media update or release, the position of a modeler or skinner could be advertised. I know that if PlanetQuake included the position advertisement you might have someone apply or come here to help out. You never know...

Yeah, we've been thinking of adding a modeler/skinner to our ranks. I'll try to put out some advertisements this week.

just dont make a myriad of skins/models. i like how wq3 has 8 skins only. this way everybody has those 8 skins. i hate it when i join a vq3 server and everybody is running around as sarge because they have a dowloaded skin.

Maybe I'll ask him about adding the indian model to WQ3 at least... but I doubt it.

this would be cool. there will have to be an indian weapon as well

Well, he said he has no time at all. Won't help the WQ3 community.
:(

Indians (Native Americans) don't really figure in the Spaghetti Westerns, though. Since the films were shot in Spain, there is more of a Mexican/Spanish flavor to them. I am willing to stand corrected, but I don't recall any settler-Indian conflicts as story lines in the films of Leone.

I know, I'm a purist. :-)

Maybe a good skin would be an African-American patterned after Woody Strode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_Strode). He was in the opening to Once Upon A Time In The West, plus there were lots of African-American cowboys in the real Wild West.

All in all... we don't have a modeler/skinner.

PS. Seattle... wish I was born there ;) (check my www to see why ;) )

I like that idea. But like Dolny said, we don't have anyone who will do this stuff yet. :| Keep your fingers crossed.
