WQ3 source code no longer available

Postby twinsen » Sun Apr 02, 2006 8:44 am

As of Sep. 2 2005 the WQ3 source code is no longer being distributed.

Does anyone have a copy of the file before it was taken down that they can send me?
Is it no longer being mirrored just because of space reasons, or is the project no longer open source?
Is there an active mirror anywhere?

These are the only links I could find.

I'm sorry, but wq3 is no longer open source. This was done to avoid getting alternative versions of the game, which might split the already small community. The code is likely to be released again later this year, however. ;)

I've never checked out the source code of a game. That would definately be cool to see... :D

You could start with the complete quake3 source, which was released last year.

In addidition to what torhu said, some clarification.

The availability of source code does not mean it is open source as defined e.g. on http://www.opensource.org - it's always a matter of the license. And Spoon (the original author) never attached any license. But, as torhu indicated, this may change in the future.

Also, @Dadmungo, some completely different open source games are http://afterwards.planetquake.gamespy.com/downloads.php and http://tdc.planetquake.gamespy.com/download.htm

I was hoping to help contribute to the source code. This seemed like a nice unique quake3 project.

It doesn't need to split the community. But I understand that without source control it would be hard for more than one developer to work on the same codebase.

And I know despite spoon naming the file open source, I suspected there wasn't a licence (even if there was, licences can change anyway). And I assume he just wanted one person to continue the project as he had done.

It would have been great to see those max files too. Its not often that you get access to artist source files too. That would have assisted in creating new content.

The timing of removing the source code seemed to be not long after the quake3 source code was released. It would have been great to be part of the porting process to get wq3 as a stand alone game.

Its nice to hear that it might be released later this year.

We are always open to adding more dev members. If you are serious about helping, and can bring skills to the table, then we should talk. 8)

Yeah, we could always use another coder and we really need someone for model work. Like Red said.. If you have some skillz and are serious about it, shoot one of us a PM..

Lost interest? I wouldn't mind a helping hand with this project. But I should warn people that the work might get a bit boring/frustrating, because it's mostly about debugging. Some of the bugs are pretty evasive, too. But there's no problem having more than one developer, we just use diff and patch. ;)
