Welcome onboard and thanks for such detailed report.

Btw, we are missing the beginning of the engine output and specifically the renderer initialization part. Can you try again with an output redirection ?
Like:

or eventually using the 'tee' command so you'll see the output at the same time:

So you'll be able to read the output.txt file from a text reader and provide the missing part here.

Well you tried revision 271 which is pretty old.
Can you try now with the beta engines ? You can take the sparcdr pre-compiled one from http://www.smokin-guns.org/downloads/binaries/
Try r359 and r366, please.

Can you try to start the game by disabling OpenAL on the command line ? Add this:

You seems to have OSS as final backend, but this seems weird. Do you know what sound subsystem is used on your platform ? Do you have any other applications using sound in the background ?
I got 2 days ago a problem with openal initialization while I had a page on youtube opened in my browser at the same time... The Flash plugin was blocking the sound device even if the video was stopped. So be sure to close any windows before starting the game so you may avoid any bad sound interaction not well supported with OSS.

well. with the option ./smokinguns.i386 + set s_useOpenAL 0 and the compiled version does everything.

Ubuntu uses PulseAudio by default and I would say (but am not sure) that is supported by alsa and not oss

(almost everything. crashes using dynamite)

As far as I'm aware, PulseAudio is only an abstraction layer and works with ALSA as well as OSS. Ubuntu now uses ALSA as default.

I agree with /dev/random.

My own Fedora system is using Pulseaudio with Alsa as final back-end.

On my part, I'm using OpenAL and when I'm looking toward OpenAL initialization, I also got error messages during initialization but not the same than you:

As far I can see, you may have triggered a problem with OpenAL library loading, and ioQ3 team may be interested by your OpenAL problems.

So can you do few tests and checks for us on your system ?
1. Verify your PulseAudio settings to confirm the backend is Alsa: Maybe giving the output of "cat /etc/openalrc ~/.openalrc" command can be sufficient.
2. Try the v1.1b1 binary, not the SVN271 you tried without OpenAL, and try also with "+set s_useOpenal 1 +set s_alDriver libopenal.so.1".
3. Are you able to see if you have the latest OpenAL package on your system ? If yes, can you try to update it if it is not up to date, but at least give us the related packages and version.
4. Try also the last binary at rev374 I just compiled for you, it has all the last OpenAL fixes from ioQ3 team (ioQ3 rev1713): smokinguns.i386.r374
5. Can you confirm you have a 32 bits only system ?
