Adding bot support/best practices?

Postby Breli » Mon Jul 18, 2005 10:28 am

Hi folks,

As Red already knows, I am currently working on a map for WQ which is supposed to get finished soon. Thanks to Red?s help, I fixed some bugs and avoided the most serious problems.

Yesterday, I tried to add bot support (for testing purposes). I made a aas file with bspc and set some navigation nodes, added a bot and got killed by him all of a sudden :-D. Apparently, bot support works ;-).

So, technically, I know how to add bot support.

My question is: how do I best place the navigation nodes and how do I avoid bot navigation problems? Are there any best practices or known problems/issues? I don?t really understand how the navigation nodes actually work. Seemingly, the bot showed up in places he wasn?t supposed to be ?

cheers fellas

Bots will use the same spawn points as humans. If you put a spawn point in a confusing space, like a maze of shrubs, you'll need to put ai nodes at each turn to show him the way out. Other than that, bots will always travel towards an enemy or to money pickups and seem to ignore nodes that aren't near either. You should play with and spectate your bots a bit to see if they have problem areas. In wq_town I had a problem with them jumping from 2nd story windows and the ledge above the barn. They might also get stuck behind certain doors. If you encounter any of that you'll want to place "bot do not enter" or "botclip" brushes. Both are invisible and do not block humans from entering an area. A do not enter brush warns the bot to stay away while a botclip is a solid, but transparent, object. It works just like "playerclip" but only affects bots. In wq_town I put do not enter brushes over the 2nd story windows but that didn't work for the ledge so I put a botclip there. I'll send you the wq_town map when I get home tonight so you can see how I fixed problem areas.
