Eli Wallach is 93 today! Besides his role in Good Bad and Ugly, he was the bandit chief in The Magnificent Seven, which like the spaghetti westerns was a remake of a Kurosawa film.
Although I despise many other parts of the movie, one of the most heart-warming things I've seen in cinema this decade was Eli Wallach in Nora Ephron's "The Holiday." He doesn't play a large part, but he's the character that befriends Kate Winslet during her stay in Los Angeles in the movie. As her friend, he helps grow her a life of her own after being a secretary/assistant for so many years in busy-busy London. He's not just the older wise man archetype, he's a human being. And it's his acting craftsmanship that brought that to the role and further cemented the fact Ephron needs to stop being a hack and write better scripts.
