Open Source?

Postby Spoon » Sat May 08, 2004 11:23 am

Ok, guys. Sorry for not showing up the last year. There was a lot of trouble to handle. Now I took the time to think of the future of wq3. I won't work on it anymore as I now have new more challenging projects. But I think if there is somebody who is skilled in quake3 coding and who wants to continue the project, I could assemble all the stuff one would need and release it or send a link on it via email. Let me all know what you think of it. I know it's a bit late to start all that as there are now newer much greater engines than the q3-engine available. But I think after all I should at least give you that possibility.

Cya,
SPoon

PS: my westernquake3 email adress is still active

Wow ! Great to hear from the coder !

I think releasing it open source is better than abandon it. I know of two Q3 mods that released the source : The Dark Conjunction (http://www.planetquake.com/tdc/ ) and Afterwards (http://www.planetquake.com/afterwards/). I think for both mods some people at least tried to work on the respective code.

I myself don't have Q3 coding experience but I looked at the original Q3A code/tutorials once. OTOH, I do know coding in general.

Can you just talk to me on msn/irc. It would be great to have somekind of support/or just a chat with somebody who already made a great western mod.

Open Source?

Postby aquarius » Mon May 10, 2004 11:59 pm

hi spoon,
great to here again from you.
i think the best would be to release the whole source and to select someone to oversee the whole project. i don't know if somebody is able to continue coding, but this step could at least bring some attention to this mod and we definitely need new/more players.

I think you should release as Open Source if your not able to continue coding it. Who knows - It could help some person learn a thing or two.

Aside from that aspect, Someone is bound to continue work on it, The chances are more likely so aswell. Not everyone likes to ask for the code via E-mail, they'd rather just download the Source.

Open Source.

Spoon: your dissapearence really sucked, but you really did an AMAZING job with this conversion (and not only you). Just wanted to say that I never played a game with such great climax.

Now that I'm back online and have enough time to check the forums, let me add a big fat THANK YOU ! I already downloaded it. Let's see how far I can understand the source ;-) .....

Hi,
it's great to see more open source mods - especially ones as high quality as this. At the moment, the licence seems unclear though - could you add a licence.txt file stating what the licence is please (i.e. GPL, BSD etc).
