Monster Browser

Postby torhu » Wed Jul 12, 2006 8:22 pm

Here's my little side project. :)

Monster Browser is a server browser for Quake 3 mods, and standalone games using the Quake 3 engine. It's well suited for mods with few servers, since that's what I mostly play myself. The filter capabilities are limited to 'Not empty' and 'Has humans', but that's enough most of the time.

Downloads and additional information.

Project page with source code, etc.

Please post any feedback you might have. If anyone's interested in helping out with the coding, let me know. I might not be able to do much more work on this myself, but I'll consider handing over the source code to someone else. It's coded in D, with DWT for the gui. Both very pleasant technologies to work with.

Cool stuff, indeed.
Free, functional, simple and very handy.

Maybe I will try to launch it with WINE, since I'm usually a *BSD user ;)
My first suggestion is to have colored text, from vars with Q3 color syntax.
About D language, I don't know anything about it, but I can be interested in having a look in the source code, especially if there is a way to make this apps, multiplatform.

I've though about colored names, but it's too much work to get it working with the GUI library I'm using. To get it ported to linux, you'd have to port DWT. Seems the guy who was supposed to port it has given up on it. The browser itself can more or less be recompiled and expected to work, it's made to be portable.

Well, I knew about D - but I just realized, that the original also has Linux support. And after browsiung this site, even more platforms seem to be supported by DGC. Of course I have know idea about DWT, especially after torhu's latest post ;-) ...

Either way: have fun for the summer ! :-)

Hey, the app runs quite fine with Wine.
Here is shot from my BSD system ;)

The only problem I notice is that column header in DataGrid are missing.
But I know you cannot do anything about this ;)

I know Torhu is on vacation & won't see this for some time but I just have to say this tool is a must have for a quick check of the servers. Anyone who is familiar with the 9 or 10 wq3 servers that always run needn't bother with the slower "Get new list". Just do that once a week or whenever you feel like it. "Refresh list" gives you darn near instant info to see if anything's happening online. Don't get me wrong, I still ASE for other non-q3 related games. But if I just want to quickly check reliable servers for a favorite q3 mod this is much more convenient and faster.

New site for this project. Nothing else is new, but there might be a new version in a while. ;)

http://monsterbrowser.googlepages.com/

You can have 5 subdomains on a googlepages account now. Might need to enable experimental features, though.

Monster Browser 0.2 is released.

http://monsterbrowser.googlepages.com/

The most noticable news is better support for passworded servers, which I hope will be useful for people playing on the test servers. It stores the passwords on disk.

Just install over v0.1, there won't be any conflicts. :)

Some guy is working on a new port of SWT to D.

http://www.dsource.org/projects/tioport

He can already run some simple examples. So far there's only a gtk version, nothing concrete about Windows yet. The original DWT project seems to be abandoned.

Maybe there's at least hope for a linux version of Monster Browser. :)

I wondered if it would be desirable to establish an easy link to the Monster browser on the main page. I was just playing with someone from Denmark who can't get the All Seeing Eye to parse WQ3 servers for him, and has trouble finding servers with carbon-based players. I recommended he come here to get the Monster browser. I noticed that it is not very easy to drill down to the discussion group to find it.

I've edited the first post a bit, to make it clearer. And I'll also make it sticky. I hope this helps.

http://monsterbrowser.googlepages.com/

A new release of Monster Browser is out, version 0.3.

If you're only using it to check wq3 servers, you won't notice much improvement. The improvements are mostly for people who use it for more than one mod, or mods that require custom settings.

Unfortunately, WOP servers don't show in MB any more. They've set up their own, non-standard master server. I'm looking into it, but I can't make any promises.

Complete changelog here:

Code: Select all
v0.3 - 2007-05-18
------------------
- New: Custom master server and executable for each mod.  Check out mods.ini.
- New: Don't get a new list when switching mods, just do a refresh instead.
If the mod has been refreshed already, just display the list without refreshing.
This makes it a lot faster to check the server lists for more than one mod.
- New: Selection marker stays on the selected server when recieving servers.
- New: Server list and player list sorts are now stable (ie. multiple column sorting works again).
- Fix: Get more servers for some mods, like InstaUnlagged and OSP.
- Fix: Shouldn't hang when querying servers or when exiting the program anymore.
- Fix: The server table flashes a bit less when recieving servers.
- Fix: Servers get added to the list much faster, not taking network slowness into consideration.

Crap, I found a stupid bug already. The filter doesn't work if you refresh the server list. I'll probably release a new version in a couple of days.
